That is totally believable, my parents Toyota Sienna has some balls. Off the line and on the highway. I know that the new 2005 Siennas actually advertise their 1/4 mile time.
"0-60 in 4.5s, 1/4 in 16.9, Seats 8.......... seats 8?!?!" *numbers do not represent actual performance
Or something like that, like you said miss a shift and they'll leave you behind.

I used a 2004 Chevy Van for work and it hauls ares when you get on it...vans are alot lighter then in the past and more powerful, making them faster in the process...a far cry from the 80's vans that were very very heavy.

i dont think they went out and tried to make them fast, i think it was just a bi-product of wanting to hold more people and more cargo without turning into a snail IMO

I recently rented a ford E350.. that van had some guts.. it could smoke both tyres with a brake stand and then continue to lay patch a good 15 feet... I was down in deleware with it and was crusing with late 90's mustang... we came out of the toll both on 1 together and I stayed right on his arse till 90mph when the speed limited kicked in like I had thrown an anchor over the side. Bet that shook him up that a van could keep up with his muscle car.

Big deal. 1/4 mile times mean absolutely nothing. It just means you can drive the car straight while stomping on the gas pedal. Oooh...that requires a lot of skill. I would still like to see a SUV/Truck do a road course...and laugh as it tries to slalom. smile.gif
Quarter mile times is proportional to the amount of money you waste on just the engine, and requires absolutely no other skills than throwing more money on the engine to make it create more power. Now, if we were talking about a road course, then it would require some skill to create a fast road going vehicle...not just buying suspension, rollbars, tires, etc.

I agree totally.
I'm so tired of everyone thinking that the 1/4 mile is the end all of tuning. It's NOTHING.
Faithofadragon always talks about how he's got the fastest Hyundai in Crooked H, but has never raced against me.
So?
1/4 mile is BORING.
Yes, I will eventually run it a few times so i have my timeslips, as it seems nessecary to make ANYONE happy with your mods, but I really could care less.

350's and most V8's from the late 70's to early/mid 80's were horrible due to the restirctions placed upon them from emissions standards..
Quarter mile times are over rated...I enjoy my car because it looks good, is great on gas and has a unique style and, due to lack of other Tibs in my community, is still fresh

As I agree with you both, it is tough to get on a road course. And not all centres have Auto Crosses set up in parking lots. I think a lot of that mentality comes from it being that everyone has done it.
I mean look at porsche in their history the have not dramatically changed their body/engine design, and they keep up with cars that were built recently for fast lapping times. (Not sure what series it is, but it's always on the Speed Channel)
Why do you think Time Attack never hit it big over here??
