I have been reading a few sites about things you can do to better prepare yourself for times of uncertainty. One of the big things is the ability to hunt for food, and self defense. Since I personally feel that we are coming into uncertain times its never to early to start educating ones self on guns. Here is the link to the blog that has been providing information : http://thesurvivalistblog.blogspot.com/

My question to you is what do you own, and what would you recommend for someone looking for hunting and self defense weapons? Give as much info as you can as i want to kinda make a census of whats good and whats bad.

Thanks!

Well, in my opinion, you want something with power, and you want something accurate. Rate of fire, if you are hunting, isn't that important, so bolt action rifles are always good.

I own 2 British Enfields, .303 caliber, 10 round magazines. Absolutely fantastic rifle. Heavy enough to beat someone to death with, sturdy enough to use as a crutch. The Brits started using them in 1895, and it was a standard issue weapon until 1957, and used as a sniper rifle till 1986. Yes, it's that good. The only shortcoming here is the ammo. It can be hard to find sometimes, although the rifles (over 17Million made) can be had for rather cheap. You can have them bored out and fitted for the very popular and very easy to find .308 round.

Now, if you want personal defense, get a shotgun. Nothing else will do, shotgun and maybe a pistol.

My personal compliment of weapons.

2 Lee Enfields (.303)
1 Russian SKS with 30rd magazine and 8 power scope (7.62mm, very popular round)
1 Modified Shotgun (20 gauge I believe?)
1 Repeating Lever Action BB Gun. Seriously.
1 BB/Pellet pump action gun. Totally seriously.

still want to get a new shotgun and a pistol or 2.

One of our office ladies asked me once "Do you have a gun, Dave?" I told her "Amy, I wouldn't say I have a gun"

Even on the intarwebz a complete listing of what you have seems silly, but maybe that's just me.

Anywho, if you think it's going to be hard times, get MREs or similar. Cans of baked beans are tasty and last about forever.

You and everybody else around you will think of hunting. The wild game populations are only at a healthy level because hunting licenses are not unlimited. How long do the deer last if everyone shoots one? Not very.

Also:

If you plan on having to go primitive for a long time, you need a comrade you can trust. Anybody can pretend to be your buddy for 3 months. You need somebody who won't cut your throat to get that last can of beans in month #5.

Something to think about.

Hahahahah!

Very well said.

I wouldn't say that's a complete listing of the weapons at my house, but it's an idea on what someone can have there.

Oh, and make sure you always have a couple of really REALLY good knives.

MRE's, dehydrated foods, go to REI and stock up on stuff.

There's only one weapon I ever recommend for home defense... a 12-gauge. It's easy to hit your target, has good stopping power and almost never penetrates a wall.

Shotgun will go thru a wall no problem. 00 is the same as 9x 9mm slugs. Look up the box of truth website, they shoot all kinds of neat things.

Shotguns also have to be aimed. Across the street = 3" -ish diameter hole.

I use my shot guns for birds only, the rifles never get used. everything else gets hunted with archery tackle cause any idiot can kill at 100 yards or more with a gun, takes more control when you can actually hear your game from 30 yards or less.

I really think you are blowing things out of proportion Frog. the days of old, stay in the old, simple as that. Having to go out and shoot game to survive will probably never exist again. I hunt to enjoy the outdoors, not to "stay in tune" with what nature is doing.

go drink a coke, eat a hoho, watch some wrestling, and finally don't buy into all the hype.

Why would you use 00 for home protection? They make rounds specifically for home protection that do not go through [exterior] walls. Also shotguns need to be aimed less than a handgun. 3" target area vs. 3/8" target area.
