Funniest Mistakes Made While Tuning...
Most previous mistake when installing the angel eyes the bumpers almost on and i decide to test them, only the right turn on what happened was the but connector, mine not chris's didnt hold the wire I ended up having to use one hand to connect all the wires it was a PITA and took 20 mis or so to connect them
worst mistake not looking where to jack up the car, when I put my springs and struts on I realized afterward that the floors of the pass and driver floors were slightly bubbled, I hammered them back down all good now the funniest part of that was the cat was sitting about 5 feet away from me the whole time while hammering also when your under the car u have to make sure u wont lay on him a calm cat
doing a tb bypass i just did it with out taking off the strut bar and intake elbow, took much longer cause i was trying to do it faster

stupid experiences... hmmm.... maybe just a few.
Starting with my VW. My father and I hand built a 2.0 Porsche Type 4 engine for the my old 1974 Super Beetle.. High compression, dual 40 mm weber downdrafts (one barrel per cylinder) header, and a cam that made the car idle like a harley.. the problem with the build.. we installed the oilpump/distributer drive 180 degrees out. Did not affect the oil pump.. but it did make us have to install the distributer backwards...
Same car, being a high compression engine, I was running an oil cooler in the nose. the superbeetle had a small grill under the front bumper stock for use with the new automatics that VW was starting to put in their cars.. perfect place to fit an oilcooler... except I had to run oil lines under the car.. at least once every couple of months I would blow one off.. usually they blew at the engine and dumped oil down the heat exchangers (air cooled cars get heat from the exhaust) and it would fill the interior immediatly with oil smoke.. but I once did pinch a line and dribbled a trail of oil all the way to school...
Same car.. one of the first times I drove on dirt.. Came around the corner too fast and grabbed the handbrake.. car spun and dunked itself nose in to the local resevoir... right up to the doors... and I was not supposed to be back there... took forever to get it out with a length of rope and a comealong..
Next car was an Austin Healy Sprite Mark 1 (the "bug eye") I owned the car for all of a day when I had it towed home.. on the way there it bent in half due to the rust... oops
My self induced problems I can remember with my fiats was an expensive one... I had replaced the entire rear suspension of the car.. springs, shocks, (PITA.. the shocks are inside the springs and you need to drop the entire axle to get them out) and all the trailing arms and the panhard rod... Next day I dropped the car off for new tyres... three months later I am driving down the road and pull away from a light and the whole rear end slews to the right violently... I pull over and see that when they jacked the car up to replace the tyres, they bent my new control arms... well, once of them snapped from the stress.. when the axle slewed, it blew out both rear shocks.. Went back to the tire shop.... "Under new management" and I was screwed.
The second fiat had a rusty gas tank.. I had to change the fuel filter every week... anyway, I am under the car changing the differential oil and I need another inch to get the inlet bolt out... so I press up on the gas tank... and my hand goes right THROUGH the rusty metal up to my elbow.. scratching it all to hell and dumping five gallons of gas all over me... The pain was something else.
Same car, I was giving the car a tune up to get it through inspection.. so I had the air filter off and was revving the car up by hand at the carb... the moment I lean over the engine, it backfires through the carb... lost my eyebrows and the first couple inches of hair in front
I have a lot more... like the time I forgot to check the oilfilter mount on my fiat before putting a new filter on.. the old gasket from the previous filter was still stuck to it.. well, it is impossible to get a good seal and I blew most of the oil all over my parents driveway when I started the car up.
Hyundai Excel.. I bent the front crossmember while on a rally. It had held together for almost a year before finally letting go.. just as I am coming down a bridge to a traffic Circle.. immediatly both front wheels toe out by about 45 degress and I have NO Steering.. somehow I managed to get it around the circle and to a halt in a parking lot.
The Tib.. changed the oil while I was down at the shore and living up in Reading... went to leave and about ten miles up the road I hear a "ting" under the car and feel something heavu hit the floor from underneath.. I look in the rear view mirror just intime to see a HUGE plume of oilsmoke come out from under the car.. I had forgotten to tighten the oilplug properly and it had fallen out. Thankfully with no damage to my car.
