Drinking is a luxury/choice/privilege. That's the bit that bugs me about drink driving: it's not an accident, nor is it due to hardship. Plain ole selfishness that often kills innocent people.

Throw the book at drunk drivers.

I don't drive drunk. If I'm setting out to drink, I have someone to drive me. A few beers hanging out with friends isn't a big deal to me.

I'm a terrible drunk driver, I don't ever drive drunk. Below 0.08% I'm not impaired any more than if I skip coffee in the morning, or if I am distracted thinking about something.

Partly because if I've had anything to drink at all I instantly turn into the safest driver in the world. Huge follow distances, never more than a couple mph over the speed limit, both hands on the wheel, full concentration on driving. Below 0.08% BAC I'm safer than if I haven't had anything to drink.

You are the reason they want to lower the limit. I'd bet hard cash that if I tested your reaction times at .05, they'd be significantly slower than sober.

BTW, driving "safer" is how many cops spot drunk drivers. When I was a firefighter, I did a few ride-alongs. If we saw someone driving exactly the speed limit, always signaling, sitting straight up in their seat, both hands on the wheel on a Friday night, they were getting pulled over and given the "sniff test" to smell for alcohol.

I avoid the overly safe driver situation to avoid suspicion. I do always signal and sit in the proper driving position though regardless of condition.

The question should be: Can I pass a driving test while X

If yes, great. I GUARANTEE that I am a better driver than the average driver at 0.05%. I'm sure I'm better than the average 80 year old with a DL at 0.08% too.

I had to go to a defensive driving course once which turned out to be mixed with a DUI class. They showed the best video of people saying sh*t like that, then after a couple of shots they where ALL over the coarse (basically an auto-x style coned course.) It was hilarious!!

Also, I learned nothing.

1 alcoholic drink will impair your judgement. You may not feel it, but it does. PLEASE, everyone, stop drinking and driving. A $20 cab ride might feel like a waste because you're not "that drunk" but what if you crash and kill/injure someone? Get arrested and thrown in jail? Lose your license? $20 doesn't seem like such a waste now does it?

Check this out-

The lives of 5 families are changed for ever, all because some guy decided he was "OK" to drive home when he really wasn't.

I have a simple reason for never drinking and driving (besides the fact that it's stupid), I would lose my job. I work in HVAC. No license, no job.

Profiling safe driving habits? What should one do when they see a cop following them, drive erratic?

I have been in this situation on more than one occasion. Driving out in the country under the speed limit. Then a cop comes flying up behind you. What would you do? Pull over and throw yourself down face first on the pavement?

Trust me... it's VERY easy to tell the difference between a safe driver and a driver thinking, "Oh sh*t, cop!".
