Default Feds want to lower DUI standard

From a .08 to .05

http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/14/us/nts...html?hpt=hp_t1

  • For a decade, 0.08 has been the blood alcohol benchmark to consider a driver intoxicated
  • National Transportation Safety Board would like to see a nationwide 0.05 level
  • The board would also like to see swifter action on taking away offenders' licenses

.05 would be like 2 or 3 beers. If they go through with it, I can see the courts getting jammed up even more than they are now with this stuff.

4 beers in 2 hours for a 200lb man would be .047 according to the website. Too close for comfort, and quite ridiculous.

3 beers in 2 hours for 150lb woman would be .057... but even after 1 beer she'd still be driving erratically and be a threat to society.

I do think there should be harsher penalties for repeat offenders. So many people get 4, 5, or more DUIs. I think fines should be harsher and level of intoxication should be considered (double limit = aggravated DUI). Multiple offenses and any damages/crashes/injuries to others should increase those penalties exponentially.

In Ontario they have already done this. While .08 is still the legal limit, if you blow 0.05 they can take your car and suspend your license.

Really makes you think twice about going for a drink after work. Which I guess is the idea, but still sucks.

According to that calculator I can drink 6 beers in 2 hours, but 7 beers puts me at 0.051% BAC.

Under current laws I could drink 9 beers legally, but 10 would put me at 0.087% BAC and I would get a DUI.

Honestly, that's 2 pitchers in 2 hours to make me too drunk to drive currently. That's pretty fair. One pitcher plus a beer for 0.050% is dumb, I'm not at all buzzed after that.

I love that calculator. Supposedly I was a 0.316 with what I consumed a few weeks ago on a Sunday. I made it to work on Monday even.

First DUI in Uk is Instant ban of 1 year and fine of up to £5,000.00 ($7,000.00) with Full written & Hazards aware test, Then retake your driving test.

Second DUI is 2-5 years

Third DUI i'v heard is life ban in court.

See that's the sh*t they need to do here! Instead of talking about ridiculouse levels like 1 beer putting a little lady over the line, how about we we drop the hammer on somebody who gets caught DUI? How hard is this, really? I get reeeeal tired of hearing the news talk about people on their 4th, 5th, 13th offense being caught AGAIN.

But since my county District Attorney (whose office oversees repeat DUI cases) was just caught SNOCKERED in her car with a bottle of vodka on the seat and she hasn't resigned, what does that tell you about the culture of law enforcement down here.

I think that's the point of changing the law.

I'm wondering how many people on this site have been directly affected by drunk driving? I have been a few times. When someone close to you loses a life, for no reason other than some dumb-ass thought he was ok to drive after 5 or 6 beers, it really opens up your eyes to how stupid drinking and driving is. Any alcohol impairs your ability to think and your reaction time behind the wheel. I would fully support a total ban on drinking and driving. No tolerance. There are other options to get home. Have a DD, cab, call a friend, subway or bus, walk. Think of how many lives would be saved. Maybe one of those lives saved would be someone close to you.

I'm all in favor of 3 strikes, you're out. 3rd DUI is 25 to life in big-boy prison. I'll gladly pay another 1% in sales tax to build a couple more prisons for all of 'em.

Wise words!

Have the common f*ck sense to get a DD or cab!!

I never go drinking unless I have a designated sober. It shouldn't even need to be a law, if you're intending to drink, find a friend who doesn't and buy them dinner. If by the 3rd time you don't get it, you need to be locked away from the rest of society and removed from the gene pool. I motion we add a castration clause. Because conjugal visits can still yield offspring.
