Default Buying a Hyundai Accent.... Maybe..

Ok. Down the street is a Metallic pink Hyundai Accent. Probably a 96 or 97. It has 95k and look to be in almost perfect shape. For $995. I havent test driven it yet but it has an 01/06 inspection sticker on it. BRAND NEW!! The car is for my GF. So here are my questions.

Are these cars reliable?
It's a stick and she dont drive sticks. My tibby is an A/T I dont like A/T can i swap the trannies?
Are the parts for these as expensive as the tibby? Cause that could really hurt

I am not sure if you can swap trannies or not, but you realize how hard it is to to do a AT to Manual transmision swap?

For under a grand, that's not a bad deal (depending on the milage)..these cars orginally sold for around 8 to 10 grand....give it a spin and check to see if there might be anything else that needs fixing..I would also go find a blue book after you check it out and see how much these things are worth now.

I started it up. Sounds good. Only thing is. There is a slight ticking sound under the hood. Any ideas what it could be? Also the Driver's inside door handle is missing and the Passenger outside door handle is missing. So its a quick run to the junk yard. but i know i could get the guy down to 750.

could be looking at HLAs.... if the accent has them. And yes, I find accents in the yards all the time.. that and old excels and elantras... never any tibs though.. so it should not be hard to find what you need.

96 accents are probably worth $600-$800 unless it's in mint condition. hmm.

in my opinion, it's a good deal. accents are fairly reliable cars. good run for the money. your girlfriend doesn't like stick, but nobody does until they spend some time with it. they think that they don't like stick because they have no idea what it is to spend some time with one. for somebody to like stick, they have to either be born into the impression that they cannot settle for anything less, or they have to spend hours, days, months dealing with it. i garuntee if the situation is one of those, a person will NOT like automatic. nobody really gets the real idea until they experience it. they can be under an impression that they don't like stick, but that means they spent little to no time with one.

now for my opinion. accents are nice cars. very, very economic. but these days, used 96-97 tiburons go for 1k. you get a lot more for the money. four disc brakes, fogs, power windows, sunroof if lucky, and 137 horses. your girl will be much happier with a tiburon. however, insurance will be a bit higher than the accent and the fuel economy will be a bit less. but they will be easier to hook up than accents.

bit if you insist, accents are nice cars. the flaw that i feel with them after driving them... and seeing them on the streets, is the fact that if there is an accident, the driver of the accent is really going to get it. in a tiburon, the bodyshell is the stiffest in it's class. for 1k, you won't be as hurt. i'd just look in the paper or cars.com and find a 96-97 tiburon. they're safer and more reliable. your girlfriend would be that much happier driving a sporty car.

Unless, the accent was the GT model. those are cool as hell.
