ahhh....good choice.

going to a more primitive weapon like a muzzleloader will definitely make your appreciate your kill more. depending on your time i would if i was you take a few weekends out K_R and go to a range to find your your abilities with the gun. most muzzleloaders using a ball as a projectile usually doesn't have very good accuracy after 50 yards or so.

if you want to test yourself do this...

Alaska has a mandatory bowhunting school you take if you want to bowhunt there. the final a basically only test you take is you have to keep 5 arrows in a pie plate at 30 yards. I would say if you can keep the same amount of shots at 50 yards, i would be really comfortable about going out to take a ethical kill, not to just go kill a buck, but that is just me.

here is the big boy i got last year, field dressed at 205lbs....

Thanks Ursonvs!! That's one sweet buck! Sweet story too!

Yeah dude, after I get really experienced, I plan on staying with muzzle loader. My friend killed a buck with the same rifle I have, with a clean shot to the heart at 250 yards! Here's the model I'm buying from him. . He bought it brand new at Walmart for $150 so $50 with all the stuff to hunt is a great deal. The reason he is selling it is because he bought a new Thomspon Center Muzzleloader.

oh well... not the kind I was thinking about. i was tqlking about more on the line of hawkins/kentucky long rifle style. with your setup I would start sighting in at 50 and see what group looks like a 100.

probably 150 grains of pyrodex poweder pellets with a nice sabot 250 gr bullet will get you some really good results.

I have hunted with pretty much the same CVA muzzleloader for a while now. Just make sure you clean it after every 3rd shot or so. That black powder really gums up everything everywhere and the last thing you want is it to fail when you go out on your hunt. Otherwise, its a very nice rifle for how much you paid for it. But if you do decide to go with centerfire a .270 will do the job just fine otherwise a nice .30-06 is another great choice. .30-06 has more knock down power, but the .270 shoots a much flatter trajectory over long ranges.

BTW Nice buck Ursonvs!!

Thats a realy nice looking black powered there laugh.gif Ive never gotten to to use one, but it looks like alot of fun. My personal favorite for dear hunting has always been the .30-06, specialy as a first rifle. The nockdown power is a plus for me, as well as the relative ease of shooting most of them. With good loads the power lvls rival some of the slower magnums and trajectory is decent enough to make it effective out to 300yrds (for me, i know some folks will swear it out to much greater distance). Id realy suggest a savage rifle if you do decide to get a repeater some time. good price, very accurate and decently comfortable to shoot.

Urson thats a realy nice buck laugh.gif. Just off hand your mention of the kentucky or hawkins rifle makes me think you prefer the older style guns?

Hey, what scope and scope mounts do you prefer for the CVA I have? How many yards is good for a practice range?

Clean every third shot? geez. I guess it's not a good gun to shoot at the range unless I bring a cleaning kiT?? LOL My friend said that he cleans it with soap and water, then oils it. is this correct?

Oh yeah, did i mention that I'm going to order a black powder revolver? It's wierd that all my life I was never interested in Blackpowder until my friend talked about it 3 days ago.

I finally got it. I can't wait to shoot it. One of those bullet tips is going through a deer's heart. I just need to buy a scope and cleaning solvent and I'm all set. this baby is already a veteran; the guy who sold it to me got a doe with it.
