As a staff member here, i can say we appreciate that you can come over here and make peace, there is no need to have an internet fight, trust me, the RdTiburon community is one of the nicest bunch of people you will find, yah you seen some of our members losing their cool but it sucks when you hear all the same flac about your ride without disregarding their predispositions, and since madjohn is one of our most dedicated members so we might get a little defensive when he's singled out as "rice"
But as far as rice, we are ALSO against it, just in a more lenient way. Because we have a different definition of rice, originally rice was any asian car. And now the generally accepted definition of rice is a purely cosmetic modification that is intended to make a slow car look fast. We usually go by this definition. But it seems at AR, rice is perceived as anything done to the exterior of the car, and having a tuned import no matter how nicely done, will get you ragged on.
Youll find many many threads where we tell people how stupid it is to have some park bench APC aluminum wing, 18" wheels that you can barely drive, heavy ass Chrome rims, electric superchargers, or other useless modifications.
We dont however, hate on nicely done bodykits, esspecially those that allow more airflow to an intercooler wink1.gif
BTW i was going to register over at AR.com a while ago as i saw quite a few threads that interested me, but i figured your not so cool headed members would not be able to see that nothing on my car is rice.
Sure, my car may bring a little attention from the exterior that may be what some assume is rice, but the rims are for the cornering performance, and their light, and the tires on the are just about the best tires you can get, and having rims you like isnt a crime wink1.gif The hood not only looks good, its also under half the weight of the stock hood, and vents the extreme heat thats produced under my engine bay by my turbo. Yah I have an aftermarket steering wheel because i removed powersteering for weight and power, so i need a grip on the wheel, and again, it looks good..
No big wing (the wing i do have comes stock), no graphics, no underglow. The real fun, is under the hood.
I enjoy tuning my car, i enjoy taking something that wasnt blazing fast and making it fast, thats my passion.
And not with a useless powerband...my car is very streetable and so is madjohn's car.
Look at madjohns dyno, hes got 300+ horsepower anywhere above 4800 rpms, from 4800-7500rpms is a meaty rpm band, and there will be no drop off in power when shifting. And even at 300whp it will get a 2600lb car moving real easily.
shit, 200whp is enough to get you moving quickly on a light car, and If you continue looking the dyno hes got 200+whp anywhere above 3700rpm, so if he forgets to shift hes not going to sit there puttering waiting for the turbo to spool, itll still pull nicely.
Trust me, if the powerband was useless, john wouldnt rock the setup, he doesnt use his car just to show nice numbers at a dyno, his car was built to race the mountains, and he drives it daily, showing up ricers who think his wing is the extent of his modifications
So in my ever so brief post, we gladly accept the olive branch, just let your buddies over at AR know were not so bad smile.gif

Rice on our site. Unless it serves a purpose (IE. I have an 87 Celica GT-S, I am thinking about turboing this, and the front has no room for an FMIC, which means, I need a new bumper. That would serve a purpose)

Rims, as long as they aren't gaudy, most won't care about. Tires are about performance, hood...don't know, depends on how it looks I guess, though venting heat from the turbo does help. Streetable is fine. I believe what people were questioning was the usefullness of where the power was made for anything off the track smile.gif

Now if it's in the range he needs it to be in for his specific racing, that's his deal, but don't expect eveyone to understand such a small, and high power range smile.gif Most of us hit our PB at (in my case 3500 for torque and 4500 for HP) sub 5k levels. hm.... I wasn't there for whatever initiated this thread, but I appreciate you coming here and sorting things out with a fair attitude.
So, this was a blowup concerning Mad_John's car or Viper?
I became a little confused with your "definition" of rice. No cosmetic changes should be made without it benefiting the performance of the vehicle, otherwise it's rice. Would that be a fair statement to describe your beliefs?
I'm just trying to understand where you're coming from.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>AR's def of rice is show and no go, and that if you make it look fast, you better back it up</div>
I agree. But if you've increase the performance by 200HP, that would seem to be "backing it up"
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE ( referring to body kits )</div><div class='quotemain'>Rice on our site. Unless it serves a purpose</div>
Are body kits not capable of being "backed up" by horsepower? I realize some are extreme and others are just plain hideous. When people think of body kits, they traditionally picture an old civic with a zip tied bumper, paint chipping (if it's even painted), and not taken care of. That seems to describe about 80% of the "body kits" I see, but some can be nicely done, properly molded and well maintained.
I naturally fall towards the asthetic value (while still striving for performance) but that's just my nature. I deal with graphic design and my college Computer/Human Interaction courses and Design Interface have my mind working with the show aspect. I see nothing wrong with trying to improve the look of the car as long as you're taking care of the engine at the same time. Tons of people hate the way my car looks, but tons of people love it... it's either one extreme or the other, but I maintain focus on the engine.

I'm sorry, but are you friggin kidding me? If any car here has the power to "back up the looks", it's Viper966 and Mad John (Tied for COTY).
As for the wing, dude, get real, what everyday street tuner tests aerodynamics? It was probably done for looks, but it doesn't matter as his car is more than fast enough. I might also mention that his car is VERY dependable and he has been boosting it for quite some time with little problem at all.
Most of us have agreed that the wing is silly, and we always say that those style wings are silly, but you can say whatever you want as he hauls ass past you.

I'm pretty sure he went for the one that is on there because of 2 reasons...
1. Peeling leather on the OEM wheel.
2. Plans to use nitrous and needed a wheel with the buttons.
Either way, since the guys at AR said that he needs to "Remove his bodykit" (remember, its the stock bodyparts), they'd probably say that the stock steeringwheel over there is rice.

Another thing that sucks about folks just pulling pics off of another site without reading is that they have no clue what they are talking about. That Dyno is NOT Mad Johns.
He's said that several times.
That dyno you all have on your site is a dyno of a car the shop that works on his has done with a similar turbo, and the power levels he's capable of making with it. If I remember correctly, that dyno came from an all drag car.

That won't sit well. We don't take well to people saying "A guy with the same mods, pulled this.>" when you haven't dynoed. Same with time slips and "A car with the same mods ran this!" We are firm believers in "You didn't run, you don't claim it"

These are the confusions you run into when you have folks from several different countries speaking to eachother.
John is an American, but he's lived his whole live in S. Korea.
As for the steering wheel, true, you CAN run Nitrous without a steering wheel, but isn't that sorta dangerous? The car may torque steer and you'd be shit out of luck.
lmao.gif wink1.gif lmao.gif
With the lack of straight driving in Korea, I'd be really iffy on putting a nitrous button anywhere else.

Well looks like this got pretty busy today... Guess I'll add to the fun...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Are body kits not capable of being "backed up" by horsepower? I realize some are extreme and others are just plain hideous. When people think of body kits, they traditionally picture an old civic with a zip tied bumper, paint chipping (if it's even painted), and not taken care of. That seems to describe about 80% of the "body kits" I see, but some can be nicely done, properly molded and well maintained.</div>
To answer a subjective question no... Because a body kit on anything other then a full out race car tuned for aero is for looks... And money spent for looks as apposed to performance is rice... Now mind you I'm not saying all body kits are ugly... I have seen a few I like myself... But thats where the real problem becomes... Every car enthusiast has bit of a ricer in them because its their pride and joy machine... And they wanna tweak the looks and the style to suit them... (even the ratrod guys with the fuzzy coon tails)
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>I naturally fall towards the asthetic value (while still striving for performance) but that's just my nature. I deal with graphic design and my college Computer/Human Interaction courses and Design Interface have my mind working with the show aspect. I see nothing wrong with trying to improve the look of the car as long as you're taking care of the engine at the same time. Tons of people hate the way my car looks, but tons of people love it... it's either one extreme or the other, but I maintain focus on the engine.</div>
That in a nutshell is exactly my point... Your happy with your car... And you've added some snot... So the fact that some of the parts are rice really matter all that much to you... I mean don't take this as an insult to you or your car... But you chose to drive a tiburon, knowing the stigma out there... So what other people thought didn't enter into your mind, just what you wanted and what you saw... Its kinda like picking a wife... To your eyes she may be the most beautiful woman in the world, but to the guy next to you she's too skinny, the guy down the block thinks she wears to much make up, and the guy she works with thinks shes a sperm guzzling thunder c*nt... Does what they think really matter long term...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Another thing that sucks about folks just pulling pics off of another site without reading is that they have no clue what they are talking about. That Dyno is NOT Mad Johns.
He's said that several times.
That dyno you all have on your site is a dyno of a car the shop that works on his has done with a similar turbo, and the power levels he's capable of making with it. If I remember correctly, that dyno came from an all drag car.</div>
Here I have to agree with Onyx... I've worked on twin cars (my father and his buddy John when I was growing up had twin 72 Novas with 350's... Same work same cam's same carbs everything... Yet my fathers was always about 30 horse higher then Jonny O's... Granted it doesn't seem like alot but the variables to cause 30 hp difference in virtual twins are such that you can't say they were interchangable...

Thank you and yes quite a few members here have been very nice... And I totally understand the defensive stand taken to support your own... see i love these really good topics. everyone allways has some kind of input.
me personally i really only care for inline style engines. it dosent matter what the cylinder count is. from my experience V style eninges really dont last in comparasin to inline engines. too much stress on the parts from the gravity. thats why you dont see V-style engines that last into the 200k mark because they just cant handle that sort of abuse.
even in the short run if u beat on a V-style its going to break and your gonna have to do seals and gaskets. thats why nascar engines get rebuild every week. BUT it has been my experience that with an inline engine you can beat on that f***er from 50-150k and it will still get up when u want it too.
and if rice by AR's definition is parts that have to do with show and not go, then america is by far the most ricey nation on the planet with our 24" chrome wheels and the big ass chrome grills on our cars.
NO OTHER COUNTRYS CARS HAVE AS MUCH BULLSHIT ON EM AS AMERICAN CARS DO.
