This is kinda of a newbie questions, and I am ashamed to even ask. I got my 2001 Tib over Thanksgiving and it is almost time for an oil change. My best friend has a 2002 Celica and it had synthetic oil in it when he bought it. I know you use synthetic oil mostly on re-built or boosted engines so I am wondering if I should even worry about it and just get my standard 10w-30, or if there is something that helps the Tiburon run smoother?

 

I run 10w30 Castrol GTX full synthetic, when i change my oil i always dump a quart or two of new oil in the motor and let it drain out the bottom, this seems to clean the motor a little better. and with castrol i swear by that oil, a guy that comes into my work *advance Auto parts* has been running it in his 88 ford Bronco II and he has almost 320 thousand miles on it..

 

well it wouldnt really matter if you put regular oil into your 2k1 since its stock and pretty new...you can use synthetic if your worried about protecting it.. i go regular in the winter cuz im not driving hard or very ofter for that matter, then synthetic in the summer where i drive hard and often..u can use the lucas additive too...like you said unless its rebuilt or boosted its personal preferance...

you can switch back. the thing is that you do not want to start using synthetic on high mileage enginesl. the molecules are smaller with synthetic oil, and will start to leak out of any small openings that didnt leak with the regular oil.

hmm..i never heard n e one say that...hmm... i didnt think there was a problem with tha... any one else have any input? once you go synthetic you shouldnt go back?

I heard the same thing, once you go with synthetic, you can't change back..butTibby's comment makes alot of sense

 

yah all i heard you could go back...i never heard nun of that stuff about the synthetic w. older engines... makes sense learn something new every day

back on topic... its just personal preferance... how many miles on it? sorry if you already said how many but i dont have tim to look i gotta go to class, gotta love Chem!

 

i run 5w-30 mobil one synthetic oil. i have 80000 thousand miles. no problems, it accually cured my valve noise.

 

It's personal preference. If you want to provide the best protection for your engine and want it to last the longest possible, use synthetic oil. If you don't care or just want to spend as little as possible, use regular mineral oil. Personally, I use Amsoil synthetic which is a true synthetic oil made with PAO's. I have 143,000 kms on my car so far and hopefully it will go two or three times that with no problem.
