Exhaust questions... (2001 Tib)
Hey all, not much of a car person myself. My girlfriend just bought a used 2001 Tiburon with 7200 miles on it and save some money too buying from a friend of ours that works at a car lot. Anyway, since I know I am going to be the one keeping it in working order, I figured registering here would be a smart move.
Well to the questions: She wants an exhaust that has some sound to it...i told her to drop a nice V8 in there......wink1.gif
Working with a limited budget, what options are available and what amount of work can I look forward to?
Also, it was mentioned to me by someone that the stock exhaust may have a removeable silencer. Anyone care to shed some light on this for me?
One more thing, whatever is done to it, has to stay legal too. Need it to pass emisions, don't want tickets, all the other good stuff....
Thanks,
-Rendition

Why a V8?
Ohhh, you're one of those Displacement = Power guys eh?
LOL
You want a full exhaust or just a new muffler?

If she wants some more sound to the car I would recommend getting a CAI (cold air intake). Or if you don't wanna spend the money for one you can check out in the DIY section how to remove the resonator from the stock intake. Here is the link for that http://www.rdtiburon.com/index.php?name=PN...viewtopic&t=161 . As far as exhaust goes, you can look on importshark.com them sell a pretty good cat back system for around $250 I believe. Or look on ebay.
REDZMAN:
Not so, Just like the deep sound of a V8. Wish mine had that sound sometime...just wouldnt sound right for my car tho
I would say more along the line of a muffler, as she is looking for the sound, not the power (yet).
Bouve124:
I wasn't aware that the CAI added much sound at the exhaust...would you reccomend a specific one, or do they all seem to to the job?
I did see the DIY on the resonator before posting. But as I mentioned, I don't know crapola, and thought most of the sound was muffler related...
She like the sound of the people riding around in civics that look like crap with the body just primed for a year before they paint it. smile.gif
Thanks

Just the muffler, then get the Apexi N1.
Perfect sound.
The CAI for the RD series Tiburons puts some NICE growl in your car.

do the resonator removal DIY. honestly if you can do they exhaust on her car that should be a cake-walk. and that alone will give you some extra growl.
and a CAI will not only increase hp (much more then just a muffler) but you get a way better sound then that of a muffler. but thats my opinion, and i hate fart can mufflers.

Ok, I was just looking around on ebay for some ideas...I noticed many auctions like the following:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...&category=38634
and
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...&category=38634
They seem like they would be easy to install and the price is a lot lower then I thought....about $50-60 after shipping. Has anyone used these? Are they one of those things where 'you get what you pay for' or is that the norm?
And the suggested muffler for about $40 at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...&category=33636
I do think I will be taking out her resonator this weekend........
Thanks

there's cheaper--->http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...7908320280&rd=1
$23 + $15.50 s/h = $38.50
yea see these are gonna be good for a little bit of a hp increase, but its not going to compare to the top of the line AEM intake, but again if all she wants is her car to SOUND fast then yea that would be fine.

you are right in that case though. when it comes to mufflers. you get what you pay for. w/ a cheap one you get a nasty weedeater meets chainsaw sound. very very annoying. but w/ the more expensive (name brand) ones you get a nice low growl that makes ppl weak in the knees. choose wisely. smile.gif
