Im installing my head unit and am running the iPod interface wire through my ashtray. I'm looking for a small wire reel, so that when you pull the wire out and let it go it will reel itself back in, much like the remote control on an airplane. I found something on ebay but maybe you guys know of something better?
The reel will be secured on the ground just behind the tray. IRS a great idea I've got but need the reel to run the wire through. Any ideas welcome!

I've seen headphone and USB which do that, but usually when it comes to thicker multi-wire cables they won't do that because of the size requirements. Have you considered using headphone connection? Or are you trying to get your IPOD to connect via J-LINK to a manufacturers connection on the stereo?
I have a IPOD hooked up in my car. It has 3 FT worth of cable which I toss into my glove box along with the IPOD. I can take up the slack so that it is 2 or 1 ft or whatever and toss it behind the dashboard. I usually use it so that I can manually control my IPOD through the J-LINK from outside the car.
Just an idea for you.

yeah it's a J Link to the back of the stereo!

basically I'm doing like you. You can actually put music in and store it in the head unit through this cable. do you think there is a way to connect it wirelessly? maybe a macintosh plug you just plug in and it uses blutooth? maybe that's the way to do it?
you think that would work? maybe something along those lines.
and i'm not sure if widock would work with my head unit since it's specifically designed for mac/pc. i can buy it for $70 but no way it's too much to spend i'd rather drill a hole through the lighter for dock.

i might just find another spot for it somewhere else.

Yeah, you can use one of these to wirelessly control your ipod. But you won't be able to see it on screen. You might be looking for the functionality of a Car PC.
Personally, my deck has iPod and SDCard hookups. I usually keep all my new music on a SDCard. Then by the time I synchronize my iPod to the computer, I've made a play-list for my new music. It's still faster to use the actual iPod interface, but play-lists help. But with my setup I actually keep my iPod in the car.
I think you're looking for something which has manual plug-in and wireless control.
