Madtib, power doesn't have a "peak to peak" value because you can't have a negative power.

I'll give you that one.I may have been thinking of something else.But....................

QUOTE
Peak power = 2 x rms. And yes, if your wire is too small a gauge, it can burn.

Peak= RMS/ .707

We're talking power, not voltage or current. "Peak = RMS/.707" is for voltage and current, not power. I'm getting a degree in electronics engineering technology, they've been drilling this into my head for the past 2 years wink1.gif

Power = Voltage*Current
Voltage(RMS) = .707*Voltage(peak)
Current(RMS) = .707*Current(peak)

Power(RMS) = Voltage(RMS)*Current(RMS)
Power(RMS) = .707*Voltage(peak)*.707*Current(peak)
Power(RMS) = (1/2)*Voltage(peak)*Current(peak)

Power(peak) = Voltage(peak)*Current(peak)

Therefore:

Power(RMS) = (1/2)*Power(peak)
Power(peak) = 2*Power(RMS)

As far as wire gauge, I found a site with wire gauge recommendations based on some give parameters (power, current, distance)

1. 8 gauge wire for 500w rms is not sufficient.

2. how many channels does the amp have?

If that was to me, my amp has 2 channels

so it's 2x80? if so 8 is good. if it's 4x400 it needs to be at least 4ga

so basically if I'm only running the amp bridged for my 2 subwoofers, it would be 80 W RMS and 8 ga would be okay? And if I hook it up to 4 speakers of subwoofers then it would be at 4x400w and I would need the 4 ga? I'm sorry if this is a thread of stupidity on my part but I'm not very wire size literate haha

it dosen't matter how you have the amp set up to run. You better off running 4ga wire. i just think it's wild that an amp is rated at 4x100 and the briged at 2x80. That is the part that is kicking my ass.

ok, like MADTIB said I have to be missing something here, so I'm gonna list EXACTLY what the specs say on the box:

1600 Watts
-Gold plated terminals and RCA jacks
-Overload and short Protection
-Adjustable gain Control
-2 x 80 W RMS Power
-10-30 K Hz
-Bass/Treble
-Stereo Amplifier
-4 x 400 W Maximum Output
-Total Harmonic Distortion <0,05%

That is word for word what the corner of the box says.

who made this amp? what model number? there is no way it can have a max of 400x4 and only have 2x80 rms. that is impossible.
