@frogger is your sub dual voice coil driven or single voice coil driven? The JL audio site offers a lot of info material in the tutorials section.
@stocker Thanks for the thorough reply.
I regret the generalized statement about the monoblock - I should have expected to be flamed
. I assumed that he runs the sub bridged as I thought it was SVC when checking the manual (link fixed to pdf manual of woofer - sorry my bad). That with the blending of the signal is wrong. You may also run different speakers from one channel (mind resistance, load variations related to frequency and response of the speaker) - with dual voice coils you can even modulate resistance (serial vs parallel).
BTW - the sub manual stated that hearing loss may occur above 100db, which is not really true without further explanation (see NIDCD site).
By ESX being not popular in the USA I meant readily available (here virtually every car-audio store has them and they are widely available from ebay and i did not find the amp on ebay.com).
I chose the amps based on test results, experience, sub manual and the stated rule of thumb. Since you appear to agree with the recommendations debating this statement probably won't lead anywhere as we seem to reach similar conclusions via different routes, which I think is good
My multi channel amp was also a lot more expensive than my speakers. Quality is great and all when stationary, but when driving you are really pressed to notice a diff with the smaller series (tested myself - unfortunately after I had bought the bigger one
). Street prices are not all over the map if you compare enough sources and always choose the lowest possible from a reliable seller. I hope no one buys at MSRP or higher (except if demand exceeds supply).
I thought more info on the original amp would be better to provide advice on amps that are likely to offer the desired improvement.
We might have a communications issue about the classes:
First off I never said anything about power supplies. Second, it is viable to state a prerequisite for a comparison (equal build quality) to preclude comments on that point and to focus on the difference (design). Please be more careful when stating that they are more power efficient under all circumstances. The difference in distortion is inherent to the design as well (especially if assuming equal build quality - combination of similar testing and pricing). I know that the distortion is not as important in a car as it is in a home HiFi environment, but I did test many amplifiers (here you may test in your own car before buying) and did notice distortion on many occasions. I cannot say that distortion does not matter if I noticed it myself even though it may not be important for someone else. Though like I said above, distortion is harder to notice when driving and may in frogger's case not be an issue - another reason for mixing class D and A/B in my recommendation.
I would even go as far to say that the box is more important than the amp. BTW - the design for a box may be found in the manual and on the JL Audio site in the tutorials section.
I do read tests in several languages, but there is a german site listing all tests (testberichte.de) which makes it a bit more convenient. And it is not my fault that you do not understand german
, but I am willing to help out if someone needs a translation.
Initially I wanted to say refurbished. Than I thought revised was the one. Which is wrong in this case and was due to me writing publications on another issue where revised is the word. Thanks for setting that right. But it is good to hear you agree on the issues. The addendum with the return policy is a good point. My first amp was also given to me and is really old. I guess end of eighties begin nineties. I pointed out the cosmetic damage because the parts may not have any functional impairments when marked as B-selection in Europe.
In general I think it is more polite not to make insinuations about whether the other person is informed, uninformed, disinformed or how they treat other people's opinions. But everyone has and is entitled to apply his or her own style and way of argueing as long as this does not impede the discussion.
