two 8s vs one 12?
could two 8's be as loud or louder than one 12? thinking of either getting two 8 inch kickers or one 12 inch kicker and thinking of doing the two 8's to be original. both would be in there perfect box the 12's box would probably be a little smaller.

The 12" sub still has a bit more surface area, and being the same type it'll probably have slightly more potential if the setups are equal. The 12 (at least use to) should have a lower frequency range also, which I prefer in a sub. Two 8's can sound fine, if it's what you want do that. It won't be a huge penalty in SPL, maybe not enough to notice even.
I had a single S15L2 and I loved it. Make sure you give the setup enough good clean power.

ALL other things being equal, the 12 has a slight edge due to size. ALL other things are pretty much never equal. Use WinISD and model both in the boxes you are considering using, and see if the output is acceptable. I have heard a car set up with a few 8s that P.O.U.N.D.E.D.
Cliffs: It depends.
