Default sound system

The speakers Im looking to get for my Tib have 420watts (rear) and 240watts (front). Do I have to get a new hu installed along with the speakers? or will the stock one be fine until I can get some extra money to get a decent hu?

wattage means nothing unless you have the power to back it
the stock radio wont power those speakers to 400+watts
a aftermarket radio wont power those to 400 watts

but a aftermarket one will power it better and make it sound better

those are the ratings for the speakers. it just means they can handle hwo ever many watts your head unit can produce. those figures are peak figures. everything will be fine. might not sound good, but it will be fine.

No HU can get the best of those speakers. What you can do is just leave the HU and put a amplifier in the back where you connect your speakers 2. (if your HU supports a amplifier)

if an hu says 50 watts peak power X 4 channels, does that mean 50 watts or 200 watts?

Well, it means both, kinda.. 50 watts PER channel (4 channels) = 200 watts MAX!.. This is NOT RMS.. RMS is usually 19-23 watts with a 50 watt x 4 deck.. Always use RMS for wattage, and match that.. You may want to hook up a nice 4 channel amp that puts 60w or so to each of those speakers.

Definately pick up a 4-channel amp for those speakers if your head unit supports one. It probably still wont make the speakers reach full potential but it will sound a lot better.

Even if your hu doesn't support an amp,ie, does not have RCA outputs, you can still integrate an amplifier.

/ yah its just a lil more complicated than running the RCA's to the amp. you have to use the stock speaker out and run it into the high input section of your amp, then run the wire to your speakers...

some amps dont even have high level inputs. in this case, you will have to buy a converter.
