Ok about a week and a half ago i painted my door panels and dash but it doesnt feel smooth when i rub my hand over it. Later on in the month or next month i am wanting to sand everything down and do it over again. Does anyone have any advice on what type of sand paper to use or what grit to use?

 

i would get some 120 grit to get the old paint off. just dont sand to much. if you want it to be smooth, you will have to wet sand with 1500 grit in between paint coats before you clear coat it. after clear coating, grab some polishing compound and buff it, followed by a coat or two of some wax.

 

alright cool thanx. I dont think ill have to wet sand it . i think its more that some dust or soemthing got into the paint while it was wet. But yea thats what i was wondering thanx man

 

at autozone or something they have paint prep. i think its basicly just ethyl alcohol. its cool because it cleans and dries in seconds. get some "shop" towels to wipe, since they are supposedly lint free.

 

I work at a body shop sand the paint off with something like 180 then use some dry 400 to smooth every thing down. tack cloth it off and then "prep solvent" it off lay some new primer even filler primer if you wanted. sand with 400 or 600 wet to get the crap out... prep sol again... lay your base 3 or more coats lightly go over it with 600 when it dries then a few coats of clear and wet sand that with 1500 buff it with the 3m compound

 

Alright cool thanx. The only type of sand paper that i could find was like 340 so ill just have to look more for the 400 to 1500. And then ill have to try and find the clear coat. The stupid people at advance auto told me that the paint i was useing had clear coat in it. Im useing the new dupicolor interior paint. ID a couple of questions just to make sure i do the job right...is the 600 i use after the base coats wet or dry and also where exactly could i find most of this at? and also do you happen to know about how long it takes to do all of this? cause i only get two days off of work and i need my car unfortunatly for work.

 

you can still drive around with no door panels.

it needs to be sanded dry with 600 before the paint coats, so after you primer, unless you decide to not use primer.

it will prolly be dry enough if you let it dry overnight.

 

Thanx tibby01. But what about the 600 after i put the base coat. He said lay base coat 3 or more then lightly go over with 600 when it drys. I didnt know if i needed to use wet cause of the paint or use dry. But thanx for the help everyone

you will only need to use wwet sanding when the sanding needs to be real detailed, like inbetween paint coats and when sanding clear.
