The paint on my shift knob keeps melting...

I painted my shift knob 2 times now with metalic specs and then duplicolor clear coat on top. Enamel should be good to go. The problem is that after a couple months the stuff starts melting or something. I guess skin oils, maybe something on my hands? It wil be good to go for a few months, then it will scratch right off, kinda slide. I tried adhesion promoter the first time, and primer the 2nd time. I followed directions.

It's an aluminum piece and the paint keeps comming right off. It starts off hard, (after curing) then melts.

Can someone recommend a technique/brand/type for an impermiable paint job?

go to a interior dye shop, and pick up some actual interior dye. i really like BULLDOG adhesion promoter, and SEM interior dye's, then obviousely a sealer on top instead of just basic clear spray paint.

that is if your just using basic spray paint. using the products designed for such app's work great. but ive never tried anything as high traffic as a shift knob, but ive done customers doors with the stuff, and even when you scratch it, it doesnt shop the under color.

take a bath...

no seriously some people have really acidic body sweat when it comes to paint.

some things to make sure you don't have on your hands before driving...

aftershave (good ole $4 dollar a bottle brut is a killer on clearcoat)

insect repellants (especially the kinds that have a high amount of DEET in them)

lube <--- haha, couldn't help myself lmao.gif

in several archery forums i go to there were several people brand new compound bows that the camoflage dip on the bow risers was coming off. DEET in this case was the major factor for most.

I really need to use metalic specs paint. But I'll do some research on the sealer. Thanks.

I thought so. It's your lotion. Wash your hands after you jerk off.

Bulldog Adhesion Promoter and SEM Dye, that's the way to go.

Not sure what you can do if it is an aluminum piece.. have you considered some of the two part epoxy paints?
