There should be no reason they would not work after you screw them in especially if you have them taped up!!! Does it do it as soon as you put one screw in or is it like the third or second or forth? Is there any bare spots on the wire, cause no offense if the speaker wire that is in the pictures is what you are using it looks chinzy and has very very little insulation and could easily be chafed so check it and please don't be insulted I didn't mean it that way. The only thing I can think of from everything that has been said and after you check what I just said their has to be a = feed to the metal but even that makes no sense because the rest of the car would be affected. Did you try this disconnect the wires from the amp leave the wires hooked up to the back of the speaker and bolt them down with all 4 screws now try the speakers on the other terminals this is last thing I can think of is that something is wrong with the amp I don't know this is starting to get me frustrated now but hopefully this will work at least one of these.

Yeah, the WHOLE time the wires were not connect to the amp.. nothing at all but the stock speakers.

i have one comment after reading all this,

check the copper lead wires that run from the termonals on the speaker to the voice coil by the spider.
i am not talking about any speaker wires from your amp or anything, but the actual speaker itself,

if either one is touching the frame/basket of the speaker, it would cause the speaker to short out when it is mounted back into the vehicle,

pic will show the lead/wires i am talking about
