thats how i am too, mad. what sucks for me is that i don't have an actual spare. the key will only turn the door, not work the ignition. can't get anyone to do it right (walmart and a local place have failed).....plus, i leave that spare in my car newayz, so i'd be pretty screwed (don't ask why...i still have no idea)

Did you try a dealship? I have a cheap spare that I keep in my wallet (no plastic end) and while it does work in the ignition as well.. it is a little tight and will balk at turning it sometimes.

Yes, go to your dealership and they will cut you a correct key
I've cut many tongue.gif

Anyway they have a punch machine that cuts the notches into the key, and not like a key shop which traces it out, the dealership will punch out the notches acording to a key code per your VIN.

Oh yeah and Mad, try to buff down the sides of the key a bit. The blanks that we have for the RD's and 01+ Accents (HY14, same blank) are a SMIGE too fat, and is very rough on the cylinders when you stick it in the key hole, but if you buff the sides down it'll work.
I've got it down to a science wink1.gif

WOW I though I was the only person to ever do that

I drove to my boyfriends house in a freaking blizzard a couple months ago, and when I pulled into his driveway, I got stuck halfway in, well I got out of the car to push it all the way in, and well I locked the door as I close it. Meanwhile, it was still running, with the headlights and windsheild wipers going. Plus, my spare key was in my wallet which was also in the car LOL. So we had to call AAA to open the car, and the guy was nice enough to pull my car out too for me. laugh.gif

Later model Vw bigs (not new beetles) have a plastic vent behind the side windows.. I was so bad about always locking my keys in mine that I screwed a spare key into the backside of one of them.. whenever I locked myself out.. I would pop the vent and unlock the car.

It was not until my fiat that I got better at it.. that car was IMPOSSIBLE to lock without using the key.

yea, the tibs are real easy to just open the door and hit the lock at the same time. it's a natural habit for me, and luckily i haven't left the keys in there. i have done it a total of 3 times...one time having to break a window, but it was just on a POS Ciera...

and how much to dealerships generally charge for a key cut. cuz i'm a big fan of $2 at Wal Mart, even though they don't work
