I have been 'attempting' to paint the door handle surrounds, from my Tib.
I washed them well with detergent, then when totally dry, applied 2 coats of primer. (Suitable for plastic)
Once that had dried I applied 1 coat of paint. And this is where the problem started. When the paint dried it is kind of 'furry' and comes off on your finger like a powder, I have tried 2 different makes of paint - what could be causing this?
TIA

Sounds like your primer is not compatable with your paint.
Try a wetsand on the primer before painting. 800 or finer grit, then wash/dry the part again.
That should give the new paint something to stick to.

Zorro,
When the paint wipes off, what do you see underneath, no really I'm not being like stupid or anything, is it primer or is it the color of the plastic.
You've said you tried a couple of different types of paint, but have you switched primers?
I would also sand before the primer, makes the primer stick like glue. Just MHO, of course, I could be wrong, hmm let's see how many times have I been wrong... well there was that one time back in '78... and oh yeah just a while back in '92...
Seriously, try sanding before the primer and try a different primer. The primer that I used was for Bare Metal and other surfaces, sh!t stuck like super glue.
Good luck.

The primer went on pretty well though. I used plastikote primer and paint (should be compatible)
When the pain comes off it looks a little like the proper colour. I'm using white primer and silver paint. After spraying it looks a dirty grey colour - no this isn't the colour of the paint.

lol, when I firts began painting my engine parts, I had never used any spray paints ever... and didn't know how to paint, after about 2 hours of painting and yes it did have the furry look to it, I thought I just had to blow it away and the paint would be left, but no, I was mistaken...
And my mistake was that I was too far away from the piece I was painting, so by the time the spray would reach the piece it had already dried off, and only a misty spray was reaching it... could this be your problem, try doing it on something you won't use again... and try it...
