Head Unit Question
i really like the features and looks of the panasonic. nice deep blue glow, with a really cool display. heres mine:

i got it about three years ago for 200 bucks and it works great. has 3 sets of preamp outputs. ones for the subwoofer amp and has a low pass filter with output control too. the newer ones have completely customizeable screens. you can download a program from panasonic that converts different video types to the blue look the hu uses.

I would suggest going to a car audio store a picking up three magazines/catalouges.
1 alpine
1 eclipse (if they have it)
and 1 pioneer
flip throguh all three to get the part numbers straight and compare hu - hu.
I forgot to mention the Alpine CDA-9847 has "text search" which scans your Cd for the album name/artist/ and song title for each track. It even works on some burned Cd's I have played. (comes in handy when I was trying to re-burn some onto mp3's and couldn't remember the name of the track).
I think many newer hu's have this feature, maybe not...

to clarify, is the "Alpine CDA-9847" similar to the alpine 9807?
I can't find a new alpine 9807 anywhere
tibby01-> any particular reason???
supercow-> which HU? the pioneer, alpine, or eclipse?

the pioneer, the one you linked to in your original post.
I've been a long time Kenwood fan myself. Owned a dozen of their head units, and I've installed many more of them for friends.
They have several nice mp3/dvd players for the money, and their excelon models are a better value than Alpine IMO.
But now my car has no head unit and sounds better than I could have imagined. laugh.gif

I've got an Alpine 9805. I got it was a graduation gift 2 years ago. It was retailed at about $250 and it plays excellent. It's got that mp3 capability, and it's also XM ready. I haven't had a problem since. I actually had it in my old Elantra wagon before switching it into the Tib about 3 months ago. My Tib came with a crappy Aiwa head unit. BIG different when I installed the Alpine in.
Unless you picked that HU for price, I would go with a Premier HU from Pioneer.
Here is mine and I love it!!! cool.gif

Two of the best HU's for under 250 dollars are the Alpine CDA 9843 (or 9847) and the low-end Eclipse Hu's. (can't remember numbers).
If you are getting a Hu with mp3/wma capabilities and your current Hu does not have these options then your installation will not be plug n' play you will have to disconnenct all wires because the plug will be different (I upgraded my Alpine Hu to allow mp3's to play).
I would suggest the Alpine above, it's satellite/wma/mp3 ready and has all the options you'll need. Only thing I don't like about it is that you can only press the >> button to scan the radio instead of turning the knob one frequency at a time. But I never listen to the radio anyway...now that I have mp3.
I guarantee you you you will enjoy an mp3 Hu. They hold SOOOOOO much music on one CD. I love it. So much easier and nicer for road trips/long drives.
Only thing better than the Alpine CDA 9847 ($211.93) is a DVD player with touch screen navigation/controls. But that's 4x as much.

Press the "pause" button, this will change between scan and manual seek. I own an Alpine cda9813, absolutly love it, 16 band parametric eq, time correction, sub control, motorized face, mps, satellite radio ready, AI-Net, all the goodies. Depending on how old your old pioneer is, it still may plug in. That is a nice radio though that is much easier to control than most alpines.
