I think it's for when you get into an accident, to deflect your legs down, instead of up inside your dash.
Or maybe, and this is prolly the REAL reason, it's there to make your glovebox feel more solid.
Take it out, you won't miss it. I had pics of it but can't find them.
If you take itout, take some pics and weigh it. Gotta be at least a few pounds.

Well one thing I can think of which is sort of obvious would be for when you are gonna go to the track, make sure you have less than a 1/4 tank of gas. A full tank of gas in a Tib weighs close to 100 lbs!

Hmm... lucky RD1s smile.gif I think my RD2 is prettier, though I like the bodykits for the RD1s better.
Back on topic. OP, the little metal thing in the glovebox weighs like 4 lbs. I tried getting it out one time, but some screws were in hard places and I got teed off and gave up. But when you shut your glovebox and it goes click? Thats the sound of that metal plate. If you like the sound of your glovebox, leave it in. lol.gif
I always race with just like 50 miles left in the tank. Because one time, I went to the track and got there on E, with two gallons of gas in the back. I went for a run, came back and my gas was gone from my little station where I put it. evil.gif I had to go around looking for gas for like an hour.

Keep it on topic folks.
To get the glovebox out, squeeze the sides of the box and pull so it flips ALL the way open. Then using a ratchet with a socket/phillps head on it, take out the 3 or 4 screws holding it to the crashpad.
Then take it in the house and take apart all the seperate parts.
