Read the link that faithofadragon posted.
While it's an old post, all that information is still revelant, the only thing I would add to it is to use an AEM FIC for a tuner as it is the most user friendly and has the most information on this website along with base maps to start with. The FIC wasn't available when that post was made, that's why it's not on there. It is also OBD2 compliant In case you have annual emissions inspections over in the UK.
For now just get the turbo on, run 8psi with a good tune, get used to driving with boost. Down the line if you decide you want more, than look further into replacing internals,lowering compression etc...
I'm really hoping that the car is a 5 speed as well or that will severly limit power goals
