Shell Vpower - Worth It?
Shell claims it has more than 5 times the detergents than the minimum FDA required amount. Not bad.
In South Asia, these new premium fuels were greeted with skepticism. But in environments filled with dust, start stop traffic and irregular maintainance, these new fuels performed well despite the harsh environment, often offsetting their higher cost with equivalent fuel savings. Now they sell more than regular fuel in the metro areas.
I doubt it would help a new four cylinder car. But one with 100K miles on it...Hmmm..tough to say.
I'm going to give it a shot for around 1500 miles and combine it with my Auto-Rx treatment. I monitor my car's mileage thoroughly.
Let's see what happens.

When Shell introduced the new V-power here, I gave it a try, and after 3 consecutive fuel tanks filled, I felt no gain at all, neither in performance nor in fuel mileage, so I sticked to Mobile which is like 30c less per gallon (one gallon of gasoline 97 RON octane here is at $ 4,35 , yes, FOUR US DOLLARS!)
Prices have gone up like 30% in the last two years, specially in the last year.
I tried the V-power in my dad's car, a well used (but well maintened) 1984 BMW 320 with aprox. 200,000 miles on it and there was absolutely no difference either, so I think this a a gasoline formulated for very special cars, or for Shell's gready pocket tongue.gif

I know what you mean. When I lived in South Asia, the prices were Rs. 35 per liter. Now they just crossed Rs 44. In 5 years, the price went up 25%. So, the average Indian pays $4.50 per gallon of 85 Octane Gas (Gas station owners add kerosine to maximize their profits, the b@$!@%ds!!)
Forunately, 91 Octane Gas with additives is only a 5-10 cents more, which makes it worth it (Quality control on Premium gas is much better)
America still has it good by global standards.
Now, back to this 5X detergent fuel. I don't expect to feel any power gains. On a stock ECU programmed for 87 Octane fuel, that would be stupid. This isn't the latest breed of Honda ECU's we're talking about here.(They automatically adjust to the fuel quality, allowing the engine to perform upto 5% better)
What I am expecting is a smoother idle, slightly better mileage and a better driving feel.
Let's see.

Give it a try, but I doubt it will do anything on a stock ECU with stock compression.
I'd just use some fuel cleaner every now and then instead of wasting money on more expensive gas. On the other hand, I only put premium into my Z, but that's because ECU is made for it.

Mixing fuels with other stuff is very normal on the gas station.... very bad for ours cars... and any other cars..... Thats is a problem that would be very difficult to eliminate...
In my country The Europeans cars, specially the BMW get a "fuel type" damage in less than a year (lines, pumps, injectors, filters, etc).... those %&$&/% don't care about anything...
I just trust my ODOMETER... it my MPG get lower.... I will never buy again the the last gas station....

Shell is just trying to reinvent their product in an attempt to sell more gas. Whether it makes a difference or not, the jury's still out on that one but I doubt it will make major differences. I remember when Chevron came out with Techron in their gas and people were talking whether that made a difference or not.
