Sounds like a classic thermostat problem. Try getting it replaced.

I about guarantee it's the problem.

The thermostat has a little pellet in it that reacts to heat. When it gets hot it smushes and lets the valve open and hot fluid goes thru to the radiator, keeping your car cool. If the thermostat gets damaged or corroded shut, it will not open letting it thru. Then when you sit at a light, it heats up because there is no air going thru the engine.

Run outside and check the antifreeze mang. Tell me if it's at the right level and what color it is. Also, if the engine is cool, pop off the radiator cap and look in there too. Tell me the same.

Thermostats are easy to replace. 2 or 3 bolts, remove a hose, take it out, put the new one in with some sealant, put everything back and refill your coolant. Remember Antifreeze is also COOLANT.

Prolly cost under $20.

Another thing to check... your fans. Do they come on when the car gets hot and do they come on when the air is on? A good way to check if it is your thermostat.. when the car is at operating tempeture.. feel the radiator.. it should have a nice gradiant to the temp.. going from hot at the top to cooler at the bottom.

yes, I really did say that. I am not talking about sticking your hand in the coolant, but simply touching the fins to see which are hot and which are not. Unless you leave your hand there for more than a few seconds, you are not going to get burned.
