If you are looking for one, try to find one that will also give you all of the voltage specs as well as read pending codes. The one I have does not have that and I and looking to buy one that does. Just buying one like that from the start will save you a few bucks.

The best one I have seen is Autotap, which costs $199. You will need a laptop or PDA, however. If you are just looking to get the number codes, then I think any of the cheap ones on ebay would do.

Check www.digimoto.com . I have used their scantool and software and it is great. I recently purchased the CarChip E/X through them and love it. It is tiny and you just plug it into the OBDII port and then download the info onto your desktop PC. It will log up to 300 hours of driving and you can specify up to four different sensors/readings you want logged. If you want to see the information in realtime you'll want to stick with the scantool and your laptop but I like the CarChip because it is completely out of sight and you can just leave it plugged in for days at a time and then download the info whenever you want.

Digimoto sells their scantool packages on eBay as well as their web site and they can be purchased for around $100. I highly recommend them.

You are correct. If you dont plan on needing any of the voltage information then a regular reader should work fine. It will allow you to see and reset what your code is and based on that code you can then troubleshoot the issue.
