My Exhaust Setup
Guys, you really need to search.
Everytime I see a new exhaust topic with the same questions and same answers I just cringe..seriously. It is almost ridiculous. Here is some info you would have found by searching:
In order to beat the CEL (the proper way, there are things you can buy on ebay to "trick" the o2 sensor, but that is just retarded imo, so I'm not discussing it, plus we all deserve clean air) you need to have one o2 sensor before the cat, and one o2 sensor after the cat. This means of course you will need a cat. Whether you choose a new hi-flow for like $35, or you want to reuse the stock cat, is up to you. Personally I'd go with the hi-flow. Also, this will require some modification on the wiring of your second o2 sensor, generally you need to lengthen the wires.
In order to beat some of the resonance, you should get a thrush preforated glasspack. Get the longest one possible.
The OBX/SSA/Motoria/MBRP exhausts are all 2.25" ID. Not sure what you are measuring..
There are a LOT of different options for mufflers. Basically depends on what you like. Any straight through muffler is going to be loud. If you get a magnaflow or flowmaster, you will reduce a little sound, but the biggest difference between the magnaflows and the rice cans you get with the exhausts is the tone. A nice muffler produces a SMOOTH tone, less of that barking and popping noise.
Personally, I have tried the usual "fart cannon", then with a silencer, then got magnaflow XL 3 chamber. I like the 3 chamber the best, less buzz and the smoothest tone from what I have heard, even better than the other magnaflows, though it's still a bit loud for me, so I got myself a custom muffler built, it is a 3 tube muffler which is like a stock muffler, but internal tubing has been enlarged to 2" ID and 2.5" ID inlet/outlets, also it has added more sound deadening material. I am getting that along with a preforated glasspack installed this week, so I'll let everyone know how it turns out, and maybe some more info on my custom built muffler, if I like it. It was also cheaper than a magnaflow wink1.gif
In short...
1. Get a high flow cat with a built-in o2 bung post cat. Lengthen your o2 sensor wires and stick the second o2 sensor in the cat. Get flanges welded on the cat.
2. Get a dynomax thrush preforated glasspack, the longest one you can fit after your cat is up there. Get that welded in.
3. Now, wait a few days, and see how you like the sound of your car. If you love it, great! If it's just a tad too loud, or you just want it to sound a little smoother and deeper, get a good straight through magnaflow. If it's quite a bit louder than you wanted AND you want a smoother tone, get the 3 chamber magnaflow muffler. If it's WAY louder than you wanted, and you want the smoothest tone, try to find a 3 TUBE muffler (you will restrict some flow on this, but it is well worth it, imo, and a negligible difference). If that is what you want I can get you some details on the place doing my custom muffler.
