I personally like magnaflow mufflers. They are deep and rumbly at idle, and give a nice deep mellow sound when you step on the throttle.
You can simply raise the noise level of your exhaust by going to a local exaust shop and having them remove the stock resonator. Should cost between $20 and $50. I would reccomend doing that first, before replacing the stock muffler.

I've spent over $1,000 on 3 different exhaust setups. I suggest saving up and doing it right the first time.
Buy the headers, high flow cat, and a universal muffler and have it all put together with 2.25" pipe. You'll probably have to spend about $800 usd total after labor, but it's better than the amount I've wasted.
If you just want the sound with a decent performance increase, get a cat-back system.
If you want just sound with minimal performance gains, cut off the muffler and weld on an aftermarket one.

You guys may have noticed a letter from Bill Luton in the
May '02 issue of Sport Compact Car about exhaust...page 26.
It appears that Bill has been designing and dyno testing exhaust systems for years. He seems to feel that the 2.25 diameter pipe is too small for our engines and may cost as much a 5 hp and 5 lb/ft torque. He recommends 2.5
diameter for 1.5 to 2.5 liters engines.
The entire letter is interesting
and worth reading. Since I am even now plotting and preparing for a cat-back and performance muffler I found this info quite useful..although I had heard something similar from another source before. Other than that one point, I agree with everything Josh said.
