You're better off adding 2-stroke oil to the gas at a rate of 2oz oil per 10 gallons gas. I use TCW-3 2-stoke oil I bought at Wal-Mart. Smoothed out my idle to boot.

Acetone will destroy the rubber seals in the fuel system, and do a nasty job on your paint when you spill it. This myth has been around for a long time.

Sure, give it a shot. It's only a tiny bit into the whole tank. 2 oz per 10 gallons gas.

Try anything you do for at least 2 tanks, so you know it's not a fluke.

I found this today:
http://pesn.com/2005/04/12/6900080_Acetone_and_Ester/

I was about to start a new thread about it to ask if some one knows something about this, or if someone ever try it?

Then I saw the date of the article and I did some search and found this old thread.

SO... someone try one of those things? would that be real?

I did the acetone treatment. Worked a little bit, probably increased maybe 2mpg. It was a pretty big hassle to do it though, so I don't any more. (You can't use a plastic cup or funnel - the acetone melts right through it, having to do it after every fill up can get annoying, have to buy acetone, etc etc) It does NOT hurt your 'rubber seals' or anything. As proof of this, someone put actual engine and gas tank components directly in acetone and soaked them for about a week (in 100% acetone, not an acetone/gas mix, mind you, so there was a pronounced effect), and there was absolutely no effect on all these parts. So it doesn't hurt your car.
So if you're interested in getting the little mpg addition and don't mind the hassle, go for it.

I've done this for a long time. Buy a 2 oz bottle of fingernail polish remover and toss the polish remover out. Fill with acetone. When you have driven about 10 gallons worth, have the bottle full of acetone handy and just dump it in before you fill up.

It gets old, so I lay off for a few months at a time every once in a while.

It gets me all of 1-2MPG in mixed driving, up to 4MPG on the highway.

if you're scared, just consider that it's 1-2oz per 640oz. of gas... that's <0.3%, and it's going to hurt your lines anywhere from "none" to "less than oxygenated gas"

Mythbusters sucks. Name me any episode and I'll poke a hundred holes in their "proving" techniques.

Myth: the wheel makes transportation easier

Technique: make a wheel out of wood, 1" diameter, and don't use an axle and another wheel.

Commentary: SEE?! the box just fell off the wheel and on to the floor and didn't roll anywhoere! This is SO Busted!

But the show is fun to watch tho.

Okay, how's this: on my daily commute, with only me driving the car, with weather about the same, using only 1 pump at 1 gas station, I got 26-27MPG. With Acetone, it goes up 1-2MPG. BUSTED!
Highway trips from Austin to El Paso: 30-31MPG. With Acetone, 33-34MPG. BUSTED!

You're right dude, that's all in my head. nana.gif

But when gas is $4/gal, it's sort of like clipping the toenails of an elephant sitting on your chest. It helps some, but it doesn't seem to make that much difference.
