hmmmm, very interesting. Thank you for that info, should help me figure out what's going on. I'll try doing the cat and teh ECU now, and Im driving it back to NY in a week so if that doesnt work I'll have my buddy check teh wiring.

You're in florida right? If you stop by fort Jackson, SC, i can check with my obd-II reader. We can get realtime data onscreen from both sensors and find out the problem immediately. There's even a fully functional autoshop on post we can lift the car on, pull sensors and what not. It's quicker, but it costs like $3/hour
I extended the sensor on my 2nd o2 sensor in a parkign lot about 3 months ago and I had my fingers crossed the whole time because I saw the wiring was all the same on our o2 sensors. Last week, at the auto shop, i extended my first one, but this time I extended the wiring harness instead of the sensor. So if i need to replace my 1st o2 sensor It's just a matter of replacing. I'll probly extend the wiring harness for my 2nd eventually.
If you manage to get a high speed autozone with the expensive readers that can do tuning data like a laptop, the first o2 sensor will fluctuate ALOT, about 1 time per seccond, and the 2nd should be bearly wavering.

lmao. I also picked up "ya'll" after living in florida for a mere four months back when I was like 13. So at any given time you can hear me start a sentence with ya'll and end it with eh, all in a NY accent.
Anyway, Im gonna throw this 1.8 Elantra ECU in and see what happens. If that doesn't work, I'll pick up a 2.0 Tiburon ECU from the junkyard and put that in for the time being.
k, put the ECU in, drove it around, seems to be running ok, but the CEL came back on. So now Im gonna try changing the cat. Im also wondering, if the MAF is blown, how would that effect the car? I dont think it's blown, but my buddy mentioned it so I wanna check it out just in case. I dont know what the CEL came on for, Im hoping just for the cat.

yeah, i have a feeling that the code will be for the 2nd o2 sensor not sensing a cat or sensing a inefficient cat
btw, have you looked at my code reader that i have for sale here? http://www.rdtiburon.com/index.php?showtopic=20072. it is a really useful, simple and basic tool that everyone should have in their glove box. you can read your cel codes on the fly without the hassle of going to autozone (and yeah, no autozones here in canada, so yeah) for a really, really good price!

hey tc,
just put headers in my car and went through something similar. I had no cat, and the car was running off from the 2nd o2 sensor. I left the first o2 unplugged from the wire harness.
after avoiding three tickets in one week for noise polution. . . I went down to advanced auto and picked up a cat for 70 bucks. had it welded in.
to get the wires to reach I simply cut the wire harness open up to the fire wall so the first o2 reached fine. . . and then I just extended the 2nd o2 six inches to reach after the cat. reset the ecu . . . and voila no cel and no tickets.
the only diff . . . no ecu swap for me. I am using the stock 2.0 ecu. but it is possible to get rid of that stupid cel.
