So I made the thread about all the problems Ive had with the CELs and stupid TPS not being wired up. Now the CEL is gone, and car is running great. However, it still will not pass emissions. Its a NYS OBD inspection and it failed on the dyno, 4 out of the 7 tests were incomplete, for like O2 and stuff like that. I tried driving it around and brought it back, but that didnt do anything. My setup is: 1.8 cam, 1.8 ECU, Rside TB, new iridium spark plugs, oil change done recently, WAI, underdrive pulley, brand new TPS. Everything is running smoothly, from what I can tell from driving it. But I think what might be causing it to not pass is the 1.8 ECU. I put it in about 2 years ago, and never had it tuned or anything. Im wondering if I put a 2.0 ECU back in, will that pass it? Also, I remember reading, werent there certain 1.8 ECUs that werent as good as others, ones with certain serial numbers? What sucks is, I'm supposed to go back to Canada tomorrow, and dont really even have the money to be buying parts here. I have all the parts I need at home, and then some. I have a 10 day temp and have already been pulled over, lol. Im gonna have to make a trip to Buffalo to get it inspected there.

I expect it's your cam. Call me a noob but the 1.8 cam uses more air, combined with a bbtb, and intake you have alot of air flow. Now that would mean a struggle for power from the engine, so it compensates with fuel. Now with the altered ecu the tuning would be off because of yer air/fuel??!!?

Lol im sure I will get raped for the thought but sumthing to think about..

^NO

I have everything except for the BBTB and I am fine with emissions. There have been dozens of members with this set-up and not failing their tests. Check the label on the 1.8 ECU, though I doubt thats even it b.c XXX has a REV A in his Tibby and I dont thinks hes failed(you can talk to him to make sure). So IM not sure whats causing the bad emissions, but Im sure its not the mods lol.

so what TC?

are you failing 4 out of 7 tests or something? I've never done NY emissions, here in AZ if it has brake lights and turn signals it's legal. wink1.gif

Or what, are they trying to get 7 pieces of information read off the dynamometer and only 3 are showing up? I'm confused.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>4 out of the 7 tests were incomplete, for like O2 and stuff like that.</div>

I guess I want to know what "incomplete" means. Are you aware of the condition of your 02 sensors, catalytic convertor, and other sensory?

oh yea,

..lift the car up and check for electrical tape all around. especially your 02 sensors. and unwrap the electrical tape, LOL. ..just in case.

Yeah when he connects it to the OBD scanner, it lists the 7 tests or whatever and it says either complete or not complete. I'll have to ask him later which ones. Not complete means that it didnt pass that part, I think. Im seeing him again tonight so I'll have him explain to me exactly how it all works.

The wiring for both the O2 sensors and now the TPS has all been redone. So the only thing that I could think of is the ECU. I dont know, Im just so frustrated with this damn thing.

how can it fail without the CEL on and no codes? i don't get it. you'll have to check which ones are failed but without that info you're stuck. what the hell could cause it to fail?? pfff...

^^ I think in more heavily populated areas they are stricter on their emissions.. I know here in Chicago the check for gas cap vacuum pressure, the check to see if your CEL works on start up, and the check your OBD II port, and if nothing comes up, you pass. But I think in Cali and stuff the have SMOG tests or something where they still check your exhaust output, we only have that in pre 96 cars. So as long as monoxide didn't throw a CEL from his Rev A ECU, then there is no reason he shouldn't pass. TibbyChick, take it to a shop and play dumb with the guys there to see if you can get some info on what's happening for free, or ask your emissions buddy if can tell you what the problem is.

No, damnit damnit damnit. The CEL light came back on. I dont have time to get it scanned before I go back up to TO, but after talking to my buddy , we think it's the cat. The cat was a high flow cat, but is now completely gutted. Like 2 years ago, all the honeycomb stuff broke loose and we took the cat off and dumped it all out, so now it's empty. Im gonna grab a cheap cat when I get back to tdot and see if that helps.

find out what the 7 tests are first before you start swapping out parts, cause if you haven't went with headers you should still have the original exhaust manifold which unless you gutted IT out too, should still have a cat converter built in. so long as you have it, it shouldn't be throwing a code, at least not an o2 related dtc anyway (SHOULDN'T).

He told me them last night. I know one was for the O2. I think how it works is it gathers all the readings from the different sensors, and the O2 is saying not ready. I forget what the other 3 are. He explained it all to me when I was sober, and it made sense then, but now I forgot this morning. lol

If anything, at least my exhaust is significantly quieter, hahaha.
