im bettin it is a bearing

here is a test a tech at the dealer told me

go down the freeway and when you get to a turn, listen to the car

if you turn right and you have a bad bearing on the right it will get louder cuz youll have more of a load on it
if you turn left quieter....

see what that does for ya

I'm going to make a few assumptions..

You drive an RD1, 99
4 disc brakes
The noise happens most of the time when you are in reverse and hit the brakes
It sounds like metal on metal
Coming from the driver's side rear wheel

Yes?

Seized caliper

This happened on both of my tibs that I've owned, and also to Mad-Machine, same wheel even, weird huh? I think it should be a freakin' recall.

what brake pads did you use.

i would go back in and double check the pads. its obvious that either something wasnt replaced, or something is lodged in there that shouldnt be.

which whell is it coming from?

Dude, we are listening to you. YOU are not listening to us.

These questions will be asked for like the THIRD time now, maybe you can answer them so we can help you:

Which wheel?
It happens only when you brake?
In forward or reverse? Both?
Have you looked at the ebrake at all?
How loud is the grinding
Describe the grinding sound. Does it sound like my little sister grinding her teeth? Or how about two pieces of metal hacking each other up? "Grinding" isn't very specific, man.

IMO, it's either a bearing or seized up caliper.

faith told you what to do to check for a bearing, so do that, tell us how it goes.

Now since I am the only one who thinks it may be the caliper, I'll give you a little test to do:

find out which wheel it's coming from
take the wheel off
remove the rotor
remove the caliper
once you have the caliper totally off/separated and in front of you:
try to get the two guide rods out (I'll almost guarantee that one of them will be stuck)
if so, get an air tool chisel and try to pound it out, then go to the auto shop and order the new rod, the rubber boot, and lots of white caliper grease
if you can't get it out you'll have to buy a new caliper, check the junkyards.
or else if neither of them are stuck, just go get some white caliper grease to re-lube them and put them back how they were, now you've eliminated one possible option, time to move on to something else that may be wrong.
