im in the market for a good aftermarket exhaust, i really don't care about the sound (although i am not too keen on the deep "ricer" muffler, i hate it .and sorry for those of you who have it, which is like everyone..) so i would like something which will improve my performance and make things run smoother, but really have no idea what i am looking for..

DO NOT get that exhaust. As Dweet said, it rusts out.....bad. Alot of people have had to find that out the hard way. Right now, you can either get the OBX exhaust or have a custom exhaust made.
custom would be your best bet.. find a friend who welds and buy your own bends off of jegs.com or jcwhitney.com, and then get a cheap muffler off ebay for like $40 and you'd be set. probably end up spending $170 in the end

what are the different pieces/components of an exhaust, i really don't have any idea but i know that i want to get an aftermarket exhaust to improve performance, but i don't want the deep "ricer" sound, isn't is possible to tune your exhausts?
Ok it all depends on what exactly you want. Definitely custom is THE way to go, it's more than 3 times cheaper than a good exhaust. Also, of course if your are talkng about a COMPLETE exhaust you'd have to buy headers as well, and it has to be a good item from a known manufacturer.
If your only goal is highest HP on highest rpm band, then an open pipe would be your best bet, but I tyhink you want to "help" performance and keep a usable and enjoyable ride, without the annoying RRAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH..... from ricey mufflers (that in most cases are just open pipes rapped up in a fancy case.
Here is what I have:
-OEM exhaust Manifold
-OEM Downpipe (No cat in my case)
-OEM first resonator (Just have resonator, I don't have any cat)
-After resonator comes 2,5"
-Thrush Magnum 24" long glasspack (perforated core, not louvered core)
-More 2,5" pipe (Press bend; don't have any shop that does mandrel bend)
-Summit Racing Stainless Steel muffler (good quality and only $85 shipped)
I really felt it freed some HP's on mid (3500rpm) to high (5500 rpm) power band, also improved torque, engine feels like it revs much happier now.
Please take note I already had a CAI.
The sound is really good and muffled.
I don't want to bore you guys with theory or anything, but this is what I thought when planning my exhaust:
The engine expells the same amount of gas (give or take a little if you improve breathing, but it's almost the same). So I want the engine to expell those gases better, there are two ways, remove restrictions, OR, give more room. But, as I didn't want to eliminate completely backpressure, I left the first part of the OEM pipe std., and as gases are hotter there, they move faster, then in the middle of the way they find a much larger pipe, so they don't have to travel as fast, same amount that was occupying a 2" pipe now is in a 2,5" pipe, and thus they come out slower AND quieter.
Well, I know it's performance-wise not the most efficient setup, but I came to the balance I wanted, compromise was too high to get it better (too many noise I don't want!)
