a thrown wheel bearing will make a "roaring noise" while driving down the highway. It can also cause a shake too, but that can also be due to a tire out of balance. first try the dry turn test.

UPDATE - when i turn the wheel at a complete stand still i hear the noise still. so bearing it is then.

any idea of about how much this is goin to run me?

bearings are not that expensive but you would have to get it press fit in

Well my car is getting fixed by a nice family friendish mechanic right now and its probably going to cost like 150-160 when all said and done including labour. He had to do a rear wheel bearing already and it cost a little more, like 170.

Actually if it makes the noise its not the wheel bearing. It is the half shaft. Cause the wheel bearing wouldnt be moving. Secondly on the 2000( I dont know about the other years) the wheel bearing is held in by a snap ring. Do yourself a favor jack up the front of the car and go (with the stearing wheel locked) shake the wheel if one moves more than the other one did, then the wheel bearing is bad. Secondly when your under there look at the cv joint boot.
