Some elantras have the 1.6l alpha, although I never found any mention of them in north america.

You may hear of the 1.8 and the 2.0 Beta but you probably do not know the existence of the 1.6 Beta.

hell, all 96-2003 elantra's have "beta" engines.

96-2000 = Beta1 or "J2" motors
2001+ = Beta2 or "XD" motors

If you look at your block you should see either J2 or XD cast into it.

For North America
96-98 elantras = 1.8L
99+ elantras = 2.0L

The rest of the world did get 1.6L beta's in both the Tiburon and the Elantra, but the 1.6L beta never made it to North America.

At different times, and different areas, The Elantra came with three different 1.6 litre options:

The G4CR/4G61 (Mitsu)
The G4GR (Beta)
and The G4ED (Alpha)

I'm not so sure on the dates, but I think it's something like 92-95 G4CR, 96-00 G4GR, 01+ G4ED.
Of course it's hard to tell, the G4GR might still be an option in some places.

I've never seen any mention of a 1.6 litre, alpha or beta in North America.

Here in South america there still a version of the new Elantra XD with the 1.6 Beta, what I'm not sure is if it's really a BetaII 1.6 engine, or if it's the old Beta 1.6.
