Default Turbo Charging

What exactly is turbo charging? I went on Miro R&D site and they have a turbo charged Sonata. It said they charged to 1800cc. The specs were 230 hp and 32 torque. When you turbo charge do you take a lot of your torque and make it into horsepower or something?

I'm guessing they were not listing hp and torque, but rather Kilowatts and kgf.m

32 kgf.m is approx 231 Ft Lbs of torque.

Can you provide a link to the site you were looking at. I've never seen a 1.8L in a sonata. The smallest sonata motor i know of is the 2.4L.

When turbocharging, (this is an over simplification) you are using the exhaust gas to spin a double fan. One fan is spun by the exhaust gas, the other fan that is connected to the same shaft, sucks air in and compresses it or litterly forces it into your motor.

You should gain both HP and torque when turbocharging and not loose either.

In an engine... roughly 30% of the "power" from combustion is turned into power to turn the crankshaft....30% is absorbed by the coolant system as heat...and 30% gets dumped out the exhaust pipe as hot, high velocity gas.

A turbocharger simply attempts to convert that 30% going out the exhaust pipe into more power...by forcing more air into the engine...so it makes more power...so it makes more exhaust...so it forces more air in, so it makes more power, so it makes more exhaust...repeat cycle!

Random, I've seen Sonatas with 1.8L in Asia. Those were 2nd gen (called Sonata II in Asia).

The Miro Sonata is running a 1.8 L Beta.. it is the base option for the Newest generation Sonata. The HP is in DIN hp (metric) and the torque is in Kg-m.. multiply by 7.216 to get ft lbs.
