Default Trip Computer

Hi everybody, I am new owner of a 2008 Elantra GLS and I have been hitting the forums pretty hard to find mods to make my car my own. Well, my previous vehicle was an '07 Chevy Crewcab that I sold to get better mileage for my 60 mile roundtrip commute. One of the biggest mileage savers I have found was to add the trip computer to my truck. It was pretty easy on the Chevy as the harness was already there, all I had to do was add the buttons. My question is, can that be added to the Elantra as easily as it was on the Chevy? Does Hyundai require the SE computer to activate the Trip Computer? Are the computers actually different between GLS and SE?

Thanks

How is a trip computer saving you gas?

I would argue that fuel consumption is 60% driving habits.

My '07 Accent got 50+mpg regularly with a lot of highway driving. Hell my auto tib with a bad transmission gets 35 if I play it cool.

I'm a bit confused on how the trip computer is going to help as well? It's just telling you your average MPG and miles expected from the current tank. You may be able to put one in if the plug is there, but how is that going to help with mileage?

It helps by giving you instant feedback on your driving. If you are pushing a little too hard on the gas it tells you. It is a good trainer to learn how to be much more conservative with the go peddle.

Also, I already have the Trip button but on the GLS it only cycles between Trip A and Trip B and does not have a Average MPG range.

If you can't figure out the trip computer installation, consider installing a vacuum gauge. One hose installed on a T fitting, run into the cabin. Gives instant feedback about throttle also, but no fancy MPG calculations.

Funny you said that because I was thinking the same thing. I have one of the huge vacuum gauges that was mounted on the hoods of the mid 70's cutlas. It would look pretty crazy though on the hood, maybe I could fabricate something cool for the inside though.
