Elantra GT engine stuff
Here at work doing a whole lot of nothing..came across this in Nov. 01 of Road &track
It says that the new Elantra GT has new hydraulic engine mounts and a crankshaft that now has eight counterweights instead of last year's four.
What would be the advantage of this? Would it be worth putting in?

Hydraulic engine mounts are fluid filled and as such offer a smoother and quieter ride with much less harmonic vibration from the motor.
The eight counterweights effectively increase the rotating mass of the crank, which allows it to A: idle slower, B: climb hills better and C: run "smoother" because of the greater mass. The power rating is still 140HP, but just like adding heavier wheels and tires, it will take longer to spin up because it has larger reciprocating masses to overcome.
Hyundai traded a bit of performance for a lot more ride quality.

I know it's a G4GD, so it probably has the counterweights too. I guess for a hugely el-cheapo longblock, you get the tradeoff huh?
According to Cheuk and a few others, the crank is definately mod-able. Have your favorite machine shop knock off a bunch of the weight? Probably would cost some money, just don't have them knife-edge it! wink.gif
