Hyundai Elantra Forum The Hyundai Elantra Forum. Later models (96-up) of this 4-door share their Beta engines and chassis with the Hyundai Tiburon. Earlier Mistubishi-based Hyundai Elantras (92-95) are perfect candidates for the popular 4g63t motor swap, which turns the Hyundai Elantra into a real sleeper. These characteristics make the Hyundai Elantra a great car for those who want sports car performance with family car flexibility.

Default ECU Question

My 2000 Elantra intake looks Identical to the 2001 tib, But my 2001 Elanta is totally different, No mass air sensor, no air temp sensor.
My question is, does anyone know if any of the ECU chips for the Elantras out side the USA would work on my car.I think I could see some big gains from a remaped ECU with the nitrous plus that speed limiter is starting to piss me off! Someone please tell me something I want to here.

Superchips in the UK makes a chip for MAP equipped Tibbies, so they might make one for a MAP equipped Elantra.

Other than that, You would have to send your ECU down under to the place Red had his done at....or spend $1000 on a UniChip.

I just found out that the 2001 Elantra motor has a different Head than the "normal" Beta engine that comes in tiburons and Elantras below 2000....

Your ECU should also be different to compensate for MAP vs MAF and the different Head.

Well now I have a whole new set of questions!!
1) Why did they change the Head?
2) Why do away with MAF and I thought all american sold cars had to have one?
3) Does Super Chips in the UK have a web site? I need to talk to them!

Now you have me scared!! The motor in my wife's 2000 has been around for awile, And every day I'm finding out my motor is different and I have been driving the sh!t out of it thinking it has been around and well tested.

We have no solid information on what has changed in the head, but here is the general "concept" list:

A: Supposedly Hyundai has done away with the damned HLA systems, so it's possible that the new heads can support higher redlines without destroying the damn valvetrain. They now use solid shims, and the valves must be adjusted every few years wink.gif

B: Supposedly Hyundai has eliminated the 90-degree bend in the exhaust ports. I've heard this previously from at least one person in Korea (FXTreme: Cheuk in Seoul) because it's suddenly becoming a popular swap.

C: Common sense would suggest that if Hyundai changed the exhaust layout to no longer have 90-degree bend, then the combustion chamber must have changed to facilitate this. The Hyundai head may no longer be wedge setup, but may now be a pent-roof setup. This is great for N/A, but it's a little less than desirable for boosted applications. Still, removal of the 90 degree bend would likely negate any ill effects of the pent-roof design on a boosted Beta.

Most of these rumors should be confirmed / denied this weekend, as "someone" is going to their Hyundai dealership with a socket set to pull apart a spare 2001 Elantra head.

I believe that someone will pass along their findings to Random when they finish.

Oh and also, MAF sensors are not required anywhere. A lot of import cars in the US do not use MAF, they use a MAP sensor. The only place that Hyundai sells MAF-equipped BETA motors is in North America, everyone else gets MAP (Australia, UK, Korea, et al)

All Hondas and Acuras use MAP, older Mitsus used MAS (I think they have switched to MAP now), Nissan uses MAS and MAP and one or two MAF, I think even Toyota uses MAP.

Don't sweat the MAF versus MAP thing.

Does anyone know if similar changes have been made to the 1.6L accent's head from the old 1.5L DOHC head, other than room for the increased displaement?

How did Hynudai make the extra diplacement anyway? Did they do something straightforward like bore/stroke the old motors or did they do something bassackwards (as usual it seems)? I know its getting away from the topic at hand, but it has been bothering me.
