I own a 04 accent with 126 000 km. 1.6L DOHC. I just started getting a clicking or pinging noise from the rear right wheel when lightly or moderately applying the brake. If I push hard on the brake there is no noise. When I start driving again there is just one ping or click and no noise while driving. I took the drums off both cleaned both with cleaner readjusted the brakes starting with the e-brake and then the adjustor. The noise got worse. So I readjusted both brakes, cleaned off all the rust around the drum, sanded down the pads and drums, recleaned them with brake cleaner. For now they are fine but this happened before. What could cause this. The brakes are worn evenly with a fair bit material left. The drums are 1 year old. Don't know about the springs but don't seem to weak. Could the drum be out of round? Would that cause this? Had this problem before and the hyundai tech had no idea.

Also how can you tell if a wheel bearing is going in the rear. There is not noise while driving. I tried turning the wheel hub with the tire and drum off and is stiff but have no idea how they are suppost to feel. There is no wheel play with the tire on. Is noises the biggest indicator?

If cleaning and adjusting the brakes cured it, it was brakes. Maybe there was a funky spot in the drum casting or a chip of something got inside there?

When this happened before it only cured it for a short time. Then it starts again. Never had this happen on any other car. SO I guess it means a brake or drum problem? Not a spring problem? Don't know what I should replace if it starts again in a few days. Other then all three?

So how can you tell if the rear wheel bearing is going?

Same symptoms as the front wheel bearing I'd guess. IF it happens again, see if you can change one thing at a time until it stops - and then figure out what made it go bad.
