Major brake problems with ACCENT
Hi everyone
I own a 97 Accent.
Ever since i bought it used i have had troubles with the brakes. You have to press down deep to make it stop, and pretty hard when you are going at some speed.
Turns out the problem has been traced to the rear drum brakes that loose graduation. Also the emergency brake looses grip.
I get it adjusted but again after about 2 months it looses grip completely. This is pretty dangerous and none of the people i have taken it to have been able to get it fixed.
One of the guys that worked on it thinks that it is a problem with a part that keeps the rear drum brakes under adjustment. He said he thinks one of the two is the wrong side and that when you brake or pull the emergency brake it is supossed to re adjust the brakes, mine instead, according to him, de adjust it.
Anyone know how to get this fixed for once and for all?

The theory that your mechanic guy told you makes sense.
There is a threaded adjuster and a lever that adjust the rear brakes to compensate for the rear brake pads wearing out. In this image, they are the "brake shoe adjuster" and the "lever pawl." If the adjuster is in backwards, then the brakes will adjust the wrong way, and you'd get the symptoms you describe.
It should be an easy fix. The adjuster should fit properly only one way. If you can, pull the drum off of both rear brakes and see if both adjusters are installed the same way. If not, then that's your problem.

I hope you realize that if that turns out ot be the problem you could sue BIG TIME! You realize how much danger that puts you in each and every day? I'd be fuming I were you... Hope you decide to take some action. Before its too late!

But If his bad brakes incouraged him to eat McDonalds and he was overweight he'd have a lawsuit!

It makes sense what you say. I havent taken it to the dealer yet because they usually charge plenty in this country. But i have heard that the Hyundai dealer here doesnt charge much.
Im taking it next week, i already went and talked to their brake guy.
Anyway, sueing is out of the question and its not needed.
