Thumbs up Can you convert a 1.6L Lc 4dr auto to manual?

Hi everybody,

I recently aquired a 1.6L LC 4dr for a grand. With that being said i wanted to convert to manual. I am trying to get an idea of how much time, if its possible or realistic and parts list.

I know i need the manual trans, i know i need clutch, throwout bearing, fly wheel pressure plate, slave cylinder, Clutch pedal, rod, cables. What else do i need and have many people done it like they do for nissan 240sxs? I own this hyundai and my toy wich is a 90 240sx Ka-T.

Also seperate question, which is the chance i would pass emmisions with a 2.0 beta motor? Im debating doing the swap along with the trans conversion if its a good chance. I live in New Jersey.

Some ppl have done it. I personally couldn't do it.

I'd GUESS under $500 in parts, but lotsa labor time to swap trannys.

Beta motor swaps can pass emissions, as long as the beta ECU is newer.

Someone else will b along tomorrow to explain that better.

The emissions issue depends on state laws, and I don't know NJ's laws. Busy is right though for the majority of states.

As far as difficulty it's going to be more difficult than the Beta swap will be. You'll need to find a donor car at the wrecker and get it's tranny, tranny mounts, axles, pedals, shifter & bracketry, shifter cables, clutch cable, master cylinder, hydraulic lines, and ECU at the very least. I'm sure I missed some things also. The easiest way to swap is to sell your auto Accent and buy a manual. They're worth slightly more than manuals anyways. Someone did this swap not too long ago though, if I come across who it was I'll see if I can get him to post a list.

I suggest while you're at it that you change to the Beta and the Beta tranny. The Beta tends to grenade the Alpha tranny anyways, and the only difference to you at this point will be the custom mounts.

True, but if you got a smoking deal you should be able to sell it for market value now and get a manual car for little or no extra money.

But it can be done, that's for sure. It's just a PITA. I'm going to do it to my 87 Cougar also so I know sometimes it's worth doing the swap.

When I'm finished with the beta swap I'll drive my 5 speed hatch to Jersey and trade you straight up for your 4dr auto So I can do the swap all over again. I originally wanted to do the swap in a sedan but settled for the hatch.

well we here in Pa now have the same emissions law standards as California, So I'll let you know in a few weeks when it's all together and running whether it passes or not.
