Default shifting VERY difficult

Ok...
heres the stats

XD manual transmission (2001+ elantra tranny)
Clutchmasters stage 4

Transmission came from the junkyard off a 2k1 tiburon
(tranny must of had some work done to it,... if not swapped since it has XD written on it)

After swapping the tranny in... 2 quarts of gear oil were added (coastal 80-90w gl-4 & gl-5) (old oil was never removed... yes i know its stupid)

The gear oil was drained 3 days later...due to hard shifting

Milky white crap came out...i would say about 3-4 quarts

2.5 quarts of Coastal gear oil 80-90W was added

Shifting got better...

Shifting is still difficult though... when you try to shift... it kind of feels like there is some block there that will prevent you from shifting

Its kind of like when you cant go into reverse... and you have to go from 1st to reverse...

The tranny is drivable... although annoying at times, but its definantly not raceable

Any ideas whats wrong?

Im thinking its one of these...
* clutch fluid needs to be blead (some more)
* gear oil needs to be drained some more... could be more water in there
* dam tranny is still too dam new and needs to be broken in

Anyone remember how their tranny felt with only 1K miles on it?

The difference between this tranny and my 99 tranny is a HUGE difference
My 99 shifts nice and smooth compared to this one

I did notice that the weights are different

Any clues?

Could it be i need that better gear oil needs to be used?
Im not sure if the xd trannys still require only gl-4 gear oil

I did see some special gear oil at autozone... i think it was swiftshifter? it said it was special gear oil for trannies with yellow metals such as copper...
it was mainly for certain GM trannies... i didnt see a weight rating though

Well any input would be greatly appreciated

Sounbds like beat syncros. If there was water in the case it could have mixed with the oil you added... very strange.

2nd gear oil change

Gear oil came out a bit lighter..

I changed the oil and added some more... not much of a difference

Random noticed one of my clips holding the shifter cable was not completely in...

I stuck it tightly in there.. shifting improved a bit... but not really

There is no GRINDING when i shift at ALL...

There was a tiny bit of metallic flakes when i changed the oil (drain plug has a magnet)

What else could it be?

If the synchros were bad... they would have caused a grinding noise...

Any idea whats going on?

why did you put gl5 oil in it? it's a gl4 tranny, and the sulfur in the gl5 oil eats the brass in our synchros. suicide how many miles were on the tranny before you got it? maybe the person beat up the synchros.

ok..

i doubt its the synchros because there is NO GRINDING

the oil i use is rated for both gl-4 AND gl-5 trannies

its not the oil

this started since the beginning...

additional details..

the shifter is very sticky...
sometimes its hard to get it out of first or second or third

Also...

I can shift with no problem if im under3000rpm

But if i try to shift over 3K... i get that block... once i drop under 3krpm.. it goes in

any ideas?

jaws, when they say an oil is rated for gl4 & gl5, it's gl5 oil. it surpasses the gl4 LUBRICANT requirements, but it is not gl4 oil. when the synchros are bad, you won't necessarily get grinding. what you're describing is consistent with bad synchros. like you said, it's done this since the beginning, so the synchros have probably been bad since then, and adding gl5 oil didn't help.

Pennzoil synchromesh oil added like shadohh suggested.... problem persist

Im hoping its just that the tranny is just still in the breaking in process

The problem seems to be improving

i can now shift at 4-5K rpm

If i decide to play with the shifter cables
Should i tighten the cable... or lengthen it?

Im guessing tighten...

ok... with the synchromesh... i can shift quicker...
but the block is still there

the problem seems like it is improving... although from time to time... ill get that block that wont let me shift until i drop 3k rpm

I was able to shift at 5k rpm though today

Maybe the tranny is just TOO new?

Could this be a part of the breaking in process?

I could shift quickly with no problems around 2-3k rpm
