Yeah I'd say take the alternator in to get tested (sounds like the bearing is shot), and while you're at the part store you can have them pull out the 2 liter one and see if they have the same case design/mounts- but I highly doubt it.

So you have the Alpha alternator on the Beta right now? You should be able to buy the Beta alternator if you didn't need to change alternator brackets to use the Alpha alternator. The plug may be different though, so you may need a Beta alternator plug and to splice the Beta plug into your wiring to make it work.

So, I ended up getting the Alpha alternator for $150 after a $50 core at Auto Zone with a 3 year warranty. I installed the alternator and wow what a difference. The car is running a lot better and sounds a lot better for sure. I also installed new spark plug wires too. No old problems any more. Thanks all who helped. You guys are awesome.
