Problem starting
 

Why do I have an issue when the cold weather moves in with my car. The engine does not want to start during winter and I have tired a bigger more cold cracking amps battery too. Why? Does any one else have this problem? I am driving a 02 Hyundai Accent GS with BetaII turbo.

Ok lets back up and get some information:

Do you get spark?
Do you get fuel to the fuel rail?
Does the starter engage?
Does the engine turn over?
Are you running any aftermarket engine management systems?
When did you replace your spark plugs and wires last?
Did you just by gas?

The car drives great when the weather is warm but lets see...

Not sure if I get spark.
I am pretty sure I get fuel to the fuel rail.
I have no idea about the starter.
Engine does turn over.
I am running emange blue.
Spark plugs are brand new and wires are old. Just needed money for a new set.
No on buying gas.

ok if the engine turns over then we can rule out the starter.


Have you checked your CKP? crank positioning sensor. I know a few people that say that causes some pretty interesting results. The fact that it starts when its warm out (heat expands metal so there is a contact point) but it dies in the cooler months..

you didn't just fill up so not bad gas.


does the exhaust smell heavy of gas after cranking for a bit? yep go sniff your tailpipe.

any check engine lights?

ok by larger cca battery what group to what group

next time it gives you a hard time try to disconnect the battery for 15 seconds then reconnect and see if it starts right up

(reset the computer)

Any chance you could get a video clip so we can hear it?

I have not checked the CKP. How would I go about that? Check engine light is on but has been since I did the swap years ago. Misfire code. Not sure about the gas smell. I shall check that one tonight when I get off work.

Cars are always harder to start when it's cold. How much trouble does it give you starting? Will it not start at all? Does it take 30 seconds of cranking?

One thing you can try is to crank it for about 2 seconds then quit and turn the car off, then crank it again. That adds a little extra fuel if it's starving. Air is denser when it's cold, so it takes a bit more fuel generally to get a good a/f mixture.

Sometimes it takes 30 seconds to start and sometimes not starting at all. =(
