If you have the high pressure 255 you've almost certainly damaged the stock FPR. If it's the regular pressure 255, you may or may not have. If it's a huge problem you can install an inline FPR near the tank. I wouldn't bother if you're converting to a return setup.
I would look into re-purposing some of the Evap system lines for the return. I haven't looked into it much so there may be issues but that's where I would start.
