hunting idle and check engine light on when first start
Hey everyone this is my first time posting a message. When I go out on a fairly cool day, say 50 degrees or cooler and start my 2002 Accent with only a home made air intake on it it hunts for a contstant idle and the check engine light comes on. I have an extensive backround with cars but I am new to the Hyundai scene. It is a 1.6 GS that I bought new April 2002 and Hyundai tell me it is because of my K&N airfilter and intake mods.Anyone else have the same problem ?

i would seriously doubt that it's because you have an intake and k&n filter, assuming that you made this intake correctly. i mean, i don't see how you could really f**k it up. if it works on warm days and not cold days, i'm stumped. i'm assuming you have the air intake temp sensor on the intake and you didn't mess with your map or maf (i don't know what the new hyundais have) sensor. can you describe the intake? like is it just some sort of pipe that extends from the piece with your map sensor in it, and you have a k&n filter on the end? the first thing i would do is start the car. if it happens, turn the car off and put the stock intake back on. if it stops happening, put your intake back on just to make sure that it's your intake, and not some phenomenon. if it's not your intake, like it still does it with the stock intake, take it hyundai with the stock intake on and let them figure it out.
Thanks for the reply. It is pretty much a Frankenstein intake utilising the stock air box with a k@n drop in filter. There is no maf or map sensor in line in the intake. I know Hyundai is full of it because I have modified many Hondas, Acuras, and Nissans with homemade intakes without any problems. This being my first hyundai, and not much info on hotted up accents 2000 and newer to go on I think myself that the ecu does not like a lot of cold air on initial start up. There is no chilton manual so I really do not want to go much further in mods without some knowledge of what I am getting into. I have an eaton m45 supercharger and I am wanting to use it one day.

Just wondering, what happens if you leave the Battery disconnected overnight, and then connect it in the morning. If the Idle is stable, my guess is the ECU didn't like the CHANGE between the 2 air systems.
Also, try to adjust your idle DOWN using the idle set screw on the throttle body. See if that improves anything.

We are on the same wavelength here. I just did that Friday night to Saturday morning and it did not seemto do it, but Sunday morning it did it again. It was 27 degrees Sunday morning, I am glad it only does it for a matter of seconds. I am contacting Hyundai themselves to check to see if this is a current issue with this car or not and if my car is an exception. Thank you for your input. Think of anything else let me know.
