Default High Idle and CEL Random....help me?!!!!!

Random well as you know I have had a prob with a high idle before. WEll the dealer claimed that it was my plugs when I got a tune up, well the idle after a week or so went to normal. Just recently started again and it is bad now. In the mornings it is idling around 3000!! Yeha that is a little high. And not to mention my CEL is on. I fixed the CEl once before with the battery termanal cuz at first it was a gas cap error. Well now it will not turn off and the dealer wants another f***in $80 to even test it and reset the light!!! Then it is something like $75 an hour to diagnose it afterwards! F*** that. Ok, I disconnected my stereo over 2 months ago, so I know that was not a factor. My battery tested just fine. I double checked my throttle cable and that is not it either. I cleaned out the Throttle boby and intake pipes. Still not helping out here. If anyone can help me out, it would be great.

I would start by replacing your TPS. It is only about $45 bucks from www.stcharlesauto.com, and it sounds like the problem if you are 100% sure your throttle cable has 1/4" of slack and the idle adjustment screw is set properly.

WEll so far I have replaced my plugs with the +4s again adn it has brought the idle to low 2000 RPMs but it is still a prob. I removed the battery termanel as I replaced the plugs and the CEL has not come back on yet. But what would cause the TPS to go bad, or is it just bad luck that it is the prob. If it is not the TPS what else could it be.....? I am just trying to find out all my options before I go diggin into my wallet and my engine. Thanks for your help as always Random!

replacing sensors with out testing them first will end up costing you a bundle in the end! Get your self a hanes or chiltons book and a good volt ohm meter! Test those suckers yourself and do your self a favor!! Its not that hard the book will show you everything you need to know! Look at it this way if it's not your TP sensor then you just shot that money doun the toobs!!!!! and you are back at square one!
I'm not trying to step on your toes Random just trying to leed him in the right direction and keeping him away from those damn dealers they will reem you bad!!!

I had the same problem he had. My IDLE would jump to about 2000 rpm. Per the Voltage test the TPS was fine. But when I replaced it, the problem went away.

The Error code that the CEL is recording would be a dead giveaway, but that is not an option.

You did not mention if you tried spraying wd40 or starting fluid around the TB gasket and IM gasket. If the idle changes when you do that, you've got air leaks which could cause the problem.

Spray it near the junction of the TB and IM, and that the IM/block at idle. If the idle goes up or down, you have leaks. Only do this when the idle is up to 2000 RPM.

If it does not change...then replace the TPS, if you are 100% sure your throttle cable is not sticking...

I am 100% sure it is not the cable! I have lubed that puppy up and followed it from the pedel to the TB and there are no hang ups and it is moving freely! So Ill order the TPS on Friday! So far driving on the new plugs the CEL still has not come on just yet. So still in luck there. Thanks for all your help Random!

Before you order the TPS...did you do the WD40 trick? Any change in idle?

Also check your vacuum lines if just one of them come off that can cause a world of problems. The best tool you can get is a Chilton manual for the car it will tell you where everything is and how to fix it. Also get a multimeter and check the resistance of your plug wires and coil off hand I don't know what they should be but if the resistance is messed up in either the problem your having with also be apperent. Also last but not least and this is the sucky one it might be your computer to find this out listen to you car when you start it after about a minute the computer should kick it over to the sensors to kick down your idle. Not saying any of these are the problem but they are the most common unless maybe you pulled the TB cable to tight but if it goes away after you are driving and doesn't come back then to me that would elliminate the cable. But in all seriousnes by a book for your car they only cost $12 and can save you an A$% load of cash in the future.
