engine "hiccup"
ok, something similar happened to my car before i towed a trailer to ct (most of you know this). it turned out to be the plug wires going bad. i would be driving, and the car would do a slight buck/hiccup thing...then, it degraded to the point where two of the plugs just completely went and i was running on two cylinders (it sounded like a harley). well, somthing similar has been happening, and i'm wondering if the fuel filter *might* have something to do with it. i know the fuel filter can help with idle problems, so i'm hoping it might help with this, too. any thoughts?

30,000 miles it should be changed? i have a little over 37,000 on mine also. i have the same problem...and i've never towed anything. the fuel filter makes sense...my car idles VERY HIGH! the steering wheel shakes like crazy...one of these days i swear it's just going to rattle off and keep going.....! LOL lol my car does that hiccup thing during acceleration, then hiccup, and speeds up. i was thinking maybe the speed sensor.....huh? *confused* so have you any other information on this fuel filter thing?

well, mine only seems to do it under a load, like if i'm in 2nd or 3rd at 1,000 rpms and i give it about 50% throttle. this is exactly what happened before when my plug wires went, but i figured for $15, i might as well replace the fuel filter and see if it helps. i was also thinking that the stress of towing damaged the wires, and that might be the cause of the problem, too. i'll keep you all posted, and if anyone has any suggestions, i'm all ears.

I would tell you guys to check your plugs, wires and coil packs.
If the fuel filter was the problem, you would have no power at High RPM, but it would be fine at low RPM.
at night, take your car to the darkest spot you can find. Start the car, open the hood. Rev the engine via the throttle body armature, and look for sparks/arcing on the plug wires, or coil packs.

HEY! my car is doing that as i type! When I start from a rolling start in second gear and give the car a little gas, the car stutters. I went to the dealer and they said if it is the coil pack then it would be covered under warranty. I have about 51k miles on my car. Is it time to change the spark plug wires? can that be a cause to my stuttering? HELP!!!

hey random.
what do you mean by the wires arcing? Can you actually see the electricity going through the wires? or does the wire physically just arc? Is there any other way to check if your plugs are bad?

if your plugs/wires are messed up and arcing, you'll be able to see a little flash/arc because the wires/plugs are grounding out on the block. if you suspect you're not running on all cylinders, you could run the engine and pull each wire boot off of the plug and listen for any changes in the way the engine is running. just be careful when you do it so you don't get shocked. wink i did this with a friends mustang, and i didn't get shocked by just grabbing the top of the boot and pulling it off.
