Default Camshaft journal bolt tightening order?

What is the correct order to tighten the camshaft bolts?

www.hyundaitechinfo.com > SHOP > ELANTRA(RD) >2000 > G 2.0 DOHC > Engine Mechanical System > Main Moving System > Camshaft > REASSEMBLY

Generally from left to right, in several steps of increasing torque.

DO NOT overtighten, as the journal bolts will snap right off in the head, and it will feel like you barely had them starting to tighten. Torque wrench use is required for camshaft bolts as well as valve cover bolts.

I seem to have too much oil in the HLAs. When the cams are torqued down some of the valves (that should be closed) will stay open a millimeter or two. And some of the open valves stick out farther than the valve next to it (same cam lobe)

So my question is, will the oil in the HLAs drain to the correct level when I install the head and run the engine.

Or should I try to squeeze more oil out of the HLAs? I already did this a little bit, perhaps not enough...

I wouldn't worry too much unless the HLAs just totally refuse to collapse. In fact, I didn't think about it at all, and that's probably why I recall the cam fought me to go down in its home!

...of course, if something breaks, the standard liability waiver applies

tighten journal bolts 5-10 ft lbs, finger tight and a 1/8 inch turn more to my experience

HLAs: take them out and juice them out with your thumbs until no more oil comes out of them

purpose is to add fresh oil

which you will do when you add marvel mystery to the new oil in the crankcase

this thins the oil and penetrates hlas

A few of the HLAs were seized. I Had to take them apart and clean them.

Use (only) Internet Explorer

go to www.hyundaitechinfo.com/

Sign up for a free account

Go to the SHOP section (the shop manual)

There is a diagram with the tightening sequence here: ELANTRA(RD) >2000 > G 2.0 DOHC > Engine Mechanical System > Main Moving System > Camshaft > REASSEMBLY

The torque specification is here: ELANTRA(RD) >2000 > G 2.0 DOHC > Engine Mechanical System > General > TIGHTENING TORQUE

Note there is no mention of a fractional turn or number of degrees, and 1/8 turn past torque is HORRIBLE advice. If you are at 10 on the torque wrench and go farther, you are BEGGING to have a lot more work to repair a bolt broken off in the head.

My mistake, finger tighten journal bolt then turn with wrench 1/8"

must be a strong guy to finger tighten too far

I have a complete extra set of HLAs in the same condition. Yes I could have mixed and matched the set, but where's the fun in that? This way I got to learn how to take them apart and clean them, got all the nasty oil sludge out and reoiled them, the accomplishment of diy, and I got to post a diy so others (who might not have extra HLAs) can fix theirs without paying the high cost of replacements.

I have been driving it for the past month. The engine runs great, and it's quieter than ever.
